B-shaw’s PH1 Exclusive



I drove Assen in July when it was pouring wet, not drizzling like at the Ring trackday. I had a couple of moment there, but it was nowhere near as slippery as it was on the Ring. Didn't expect this as well.



Likewise.
I will definately be going back, just most likely not next year, as my wife is expecting, but I'll try to go the year after that again. Hoping for better conditions. 😁

I'm skipping it this year too I think, tempted to do a Spa day though as I have a verry crossing to use and its far lower risk at Spa.
May visit the ring after and do a couple of slow TF laps though.
Tempted to hire the GT3RS from Dales place for some laps, would literally be a dream come true, but its mega money lol.

Still not got unit space so hyping myself up to get all this s**t sorted outside the house on the roadside :ROFLMAO:
Also moved house in Dec so had that to deal with.

However, I've been slowly collecting parts.

I now have epas collum and and controller, but annoyingly nowhere has stock of quickracks so I'm kinda stuck with this atm.

Beams at the sandblasters atm, I've ordered PMS rear bearing kit and will make the strenghening bits once I have it back.
Also did a bargain purchase on the PMS bigger bearing kit.
Paid £150 for an almost new £460 kit...

Got a cup master cylinder and a bias valve ready for the abs delete.
I had chose to put this off until I sorted a unit until I realised the above kit has no provisions for ABS so it looks like I'm doing all new solid lines on the roadside too :cry: haha

Stripped inlets off yesterday to be sent off for porting and the TB being refurbed.

Booked in with Alex at AWmotorworks for belts and cam/injector fitment and then maping at Engine Dynamics end of march to collect 3rd April.
So got a lot to do in that time and get it a MOT as its now ran out.
Gonna be fun, limited to weekends and weather as to when I can work on it :rolleyes:

Oh and all the guides that say the starter motor bolts are 13's, theyre most certainly not, theyre 16's
Maybe different on a ph1, who knows.

Now lets rewind, after the 1st box swap I had an afternoon at Curborough
The event photographer obviously doesnt like my car as both times he took no photos of mine, the 1st time I'll forgive as I managed like 1 lap before it broke.
This time though, it actually managed several, despite being broke still..

Dropping the subframe had obviously messed with the UJ on the steering rack, unbeknown to me. Was having issues with the steering all day, kept getting stuck when turned right, not ideal :ROFLMAO:

Sorted this the next day,itd just pulled off the column and not gone back on all the way thus locking out.

Is that a new/refurbed throttle body?
I have noticed mine is starting to stick when driving in stop start traffic so it's probably a downward slope for it now. I probably shlould change the throttle cable on it as a start.

Tbf I've done engine swaps and all sorts on the road outside the house, people normally more interested than annoyed.

Problem with anything like that, it's far too expensive for personal use when all you need is like 2 cars space. Most units around here cost more than a mortgage on a house with a sizable garage.

It's being changed at some point, can't find another non airbag dash so thinking of butchering the two to make something cool then go black flock

Is that a new/refurbed throttle body?

I keep looking at the “enlarged refurbed” ones on eBay and not sure about them. I really don’t want to have to do it as it will be on ITBs at some point in the future.
I know, why they stopped making them is madness. The after market ones are rubbish.

I asked Max about the enlarged option, said it isn't really beneficial on an NA, more for boost.
I think it's like £65 for just refurbed.

my laguna f4rt one was 42mm same as the twingo gt aswell. i was wondering if it was possibly smaller than the normal meg one after you said 56mm.

Parts number was the same between the lag and meg though...

yeah never seen the point in increasing the size on a clio. has anyone ever actually measured an increase in performance from one?

Not sure tbh, I assumed the D4FT was the same size as the gasket is the same iirc

Might be 56mm outer for the boost pipe. I doubt anyone has ever seen an increase from a 72mm or 80mm TB because the inlet for a 172 is s**t, its just a massive square box and some oval runners

Most people are sold it with matched inlets so will see an increase ain't think its worth the money when it's really done f**k all. Nice little money spinner though.

Just recently had mine mapped at Efi and my throttle body is playing up a little. So i askes Chris should i get the enlarged body. "Nope don't bother waste your money" was his reply as it won't do nothing.

Couldnt make the PMS strut brace work with the BC top mounts without a load of faffing around so decided to do away with the brace.
This left 3 holes on the top of each turret, I cant live with that so welded them up

@Coops Mk1 sorted me with an injector to replace the faulty one.
It fell apart when I removed it..

Also sorted me out the missinf bolt from my lower inlet, legend.

Removed the standard Master Cylinder, side by side with the 4 port cup master

Pulled the dash top out, 2 reasons. Need to sort the ABS light out and...

Decided I'd had enough of that blue flock, so I'm going to see if I can make one good dash from the two.

Removing the tray from the flocked dash to put into my original dash.
Reason being, have you ever tried to remove flocking?

This took about 2 hours and a lot of different weapons

Used some "Dogs b****cks" adhesive and I got myself a hot glue gun, to stick the tray in.

The original bits are melted in, So I sanded through these bits, leaving holes in the tray. Sanded the dash bits flat and then filled with the hot glue.
This and the adhesive U'm hoping will be strong enough.

Will be being flocked black next week.

Absolutely love your Ph1, I'd be interested to see how you get on with the ABS removal, it's something I've been considering myself due to ongoing ABS issues.

Ages back I bought the brake cooling ducts off ebay that go into the foglight holes.
As you may remember, I was far from impressed by the quality, the strength, the design, how they fitted, the finish.
I lived with them as tbf they did the job they needed to do even though they were a right pain in the arse if I ever had to remove the bumper or inner arch.

However, I spotted a post in the for sale section about some, had a look and instantly thought they looked 10x better

Well, they turned up the other day

I've not fitted them yet but I can tell you straight away theyre loads better in every single way lol

I'll be getting them fitted this weekend hopefully so I'll pop the results in here.
Might spray them satin as theyre very glossy atm.

Used weld through primer on the insides so it wasnt just bare metal, regret using it now though... rubbish, had no issues where I didnt use it, but had loads of the tacks crack that were done on the primer. Must just have contaminted the weld or something as its not like any of it was under masses of pressure.

Will clean the primer up best as I can and will be taking it to work to tig weld it up.
More little bits to finish today on it then I can look at starting doing the brake lines.

The 3/8 brake unions didnt quite work properly with the adaptors for the bias valve, I could only get them in a few threads, obviously once theres a double flared brake line in there i doubt I'd get any in.

So did a bit of a bodge, but I dont see why it wouldnt work? lol

Honestly I cannot emphasise how much better these are compared to the rubbish I had in before.
They fit easily and securely, the others were an absolute c**t to get in and then just wobbled around and came back out
Theyre also far stronger than the old ones, I almost broke the old ones trying to fit them
The ducting actually fits, havent even needed to use a cable tie its just a perfect fit and wasnt an absolute battle getting it on.

If you want some, get them off @04-182
I'm really pleased with them :cool:

Got the topmounts fitted and front suspension loosly back together too, oh and I grounded pins 14 and 15 which should stop the ABS light coming on, we shall see though

This weekend I'm hoping to have the final coats done on the beam tomorrow to be fitted on Sunday
And try making a start on the brake lines inbetween doing that. Really not looking forward to it still haha.

Rear beam all painted and built up with PMS spherical bearings and PMS bigger bearing stub axle kit

Beam fitted, I started making all the new brake lines.
Managed to use the original one that runs under the floor from the front to the back, also managed to use the original rear drivers line.
T piece on the rear beam.

Need to make a little heat shield I think, it looks close to the the exhaust but it actually runs no higher than the original. better safe than sorry though.

Needed some way of mounting my bias valve so quickly made a bracket up at work

They did have an issue with it though, in places the glue wouldnt stick and the flock is starting to lift.
Said they would do it again if I stripped it all off, or just pay £50 for it as it is. Its minimal atm but it may be an issue later on, but for now I'm happy with it.

They were TIGHT so I did what I usually do, tapped the C spanner around with a hammer, never had a problem before with the B14's
These though, the adjuster rings are made of butter, the C spanner just dug straigh in then slipped off. Had to use a pipe wrench on them which fucked them even more.
Properly s**t quality IMO

Replace the adjuster rings with some decent steel ones bud, that paint on the mirror cap looks wicked!!
 
As I'd thrown the awful heat shield from the bulkhead away, I set out at making a new one..

It's had Belts done, opted to change the waterpump this time too, turns out it was the original one :ROFLMAO:
197 cams fitted , it needed a new lambda, Alex also changed the fuel filter for me (again believed to be the original one)
It went off to Engine Dynamics to be mapped and have the 197 injectors fitted.

Now for the dissapointing bit.

They reckon the engines a bit tired and maybe getting valve float or somerthing high up the rev range

Having driven it since, it still makes a noticable difference, especially lower down in the revs.
But still, It's cost a hell of a lot of money to only get 185bhp lol
 
Asked Alex to paint my cam cover and engine mount whilst it was there and it was all off.
When I got it back and had a proper look over it, I really wasnt happy with it...

Nothing against Alex, overall I was happy and I thought the price for everything was decent.
My car was an absolute state when I took it threre, so maybe he just thought "that'll do" I dont know..
Anyone whos followed this thread or knows me will know, that absolutley will not do :ROFLMAO:

Annoyingly theres not much I could do with the cam cover without a massive amount of messing about, and most of that is covered anyway. But the mount is easy to get off so... popped to halfords and got some gloss black and made it look a bit better

Oh, Alex found out what the knock was coming from the front left...

Something I'd ruled out as itd been looked at by the place who made them and had new bearings after my previous issue with the housings spueezing the bearings too tight.
At 1st I assumed the bearing was fucked, but the actual ussue was the bearing itself moving up and down in the housing under the C clip

Honestly, this car seems to throw up issues that shouldnt be possible.
What happened here I dont know. I can only assume when machining the hole back round they took material away from the base too meaning the bearing wasnt tight against the clip?

On the positive, my car is now knock free, it hasnt been knock free for a long long time

When Alex had it, he tried to turn the airbag lights off for me with clip. However, the crash had triggered the drivers wheel airbag, thus this crash data was on the airbag ECU and this cant be removed (with clip)

Something I didnt mention above, day before it went to Alex's I took it to get tracking done, they did it, I drove down the road and it ended up back where it was to begin with, the wheel at about 1pm.
I got mad but figured I'd find the issue eventually.

I dont know whats actually happened, the rear hole has enlarged like most seem to have done (PMS sell a repair kit) but that doesnt explain both front and rear mounts being pushed so far in.

So, how do I fix this?

I buy a ph2 subframe
Cup wishbones
PMS spherical wishbone bearing kit and the bloody repair kit I mentioned above.

The panel is still dented and has some added armco shaped features, but its as good as its getting without spending silly amounts at a bodyshop.

The car has mot now too, got it all ready just in time to take it to Caffeine and Machine on the weekend
