be gentle - new 172 cup owner

  Cup Packed FF200
Hi all.:) :) :) :)

Firstly I hope to use the site often - it looks excellent

I will keep it brief, I have just purchased a 24k Clio Cup 172. (2003 53)

Ive payed too much really, but I wanted a low mileage mint example - and that costs.

I have owned 106 rallyes for the last 8 years (just sold my restored S2 106 Rallye) so I am a keen enthusiast (note enthusiast - Im purely mechanically minded and dont really like anything else about cars - ie ice etc) This is due to my engineering background. I have spent the last 8 years working on and restoring 2 rallyes - the latest one I just sold calling itthe best example S2 left, so I take pride in my car ownership both mechanically and on the eye:)

I will post some pics and look forward to joining and speaking to all the members soon!

Welcome mate you look very handy, im sure your advice will be most welcomed on here!

thanks Danny, I'm sure until I find my feet with this type of Renault I will be asking you for lots of advice! :) :) :)

Ive worked on a few, but not the 2 litre - i dont fancy attempting a cambelt on this! Although I can't be worse than a 405 Mi16 :S :S

welcome to the madhouse james!! enjoy your stay

Cheers, please look after me! :) :)

haha, ofcourse your car will need done now as its nearly 5 years old (doesnt look it right enough!!!)

I just got my cambelt and tensioners done from a mechanic (im not that clever when it comes to the nitty gritty but i do try) And he described it as nothing short of a nightmare, although i was very impressed as he only had the car for 12 hours and that was him doing a service aswell, i managed to get it all done for £550 which i thought was most resonable.

Ive got a 2001 Ph 1 172:rasp:

Your right - it is approaching the 5 year mark.

tbh I would do it myself, but its just time at the mo is as a premium, i'm working 10 hour days

Plus without ramps etc it would just take twice as long , and I haven't got any real good tensioning equipment, its not the sort of thing you want to do wrong, so I will end up getting a colleague of mine to do it.

Actually whilst we are on the subject I am having real trouble finding any literature (ie haynes) on the 2 litre engine - which means I have no torque wrench settings etc - I have access to Autodata but need something at home really.

Ive been looking at buying the dealer type CD software from 'cough cough' somewhere.....

What do you suggest?

Im not sure where one would aquire such a thing, i would have thought amazon would have manuals and what have you. I would have thought that there wouldnt be a specific haynes manual but it would just give you the 1998cc variant within it under "petrol"

Im actualy looking for one myself truth be known!

Welcome to CS :)

Nice choice with a cup :approve:

Thanks Marky. I can't believe I have brought one - I sold the Rallye to get something practical for work! :S :S :S

Hi, I spent a fortune (stupid - yes but...) restoring it and without blowing my own trumpet is was probably one of the best left in the county - I never saw anything better. I like working on my cars!! :D :D

ha ha - this sounds stupid but the main reason I went for the cup is the same as my old rallye - I hate anything not necessary - its more to fix when it goes wrong.

Its a pitty the cup has electric windows and PAS - I would have binned both given my choice.

However - no sun roof, no ABS and no air con makes up for it.

As far as I can tell there's no Haynes manual for the 2.0 16v.
There is one for the ph2, but it doesn't include information on the diesels or Renaultsport variants.

Yes, I sold the rallye (R reg) for over 3.7k - They are rare in unmolested decent cond. Feel free to view my Photobucket page. (link at the top in my first posts) I've been owning French cars for 10 years now. :) not that I shoudl be proud of that - there a pain!

I'm planning on keeping the 172 standard for now.

Hi.

Correct, I have the haynes for the Mk2 already for the missus - alot of the chassis/body/electrics is similar to the cup (obviously).

Unfortunately thats about it! - I have sourced a book off the net (dunno how good it will be?) and Auto Data books/CD's seem the only option for me at the mo (although the CD's go up to £600!??:dead::dapprove: )

Just a qiuck mention that I forgot earlier is that I don't mind helping and offering advice where ever possible with any car related technical/engineering questions.

Not that I know enough about the 2.0 litre yet, any general motor car technical questions I can help with please ask - I always try to help people out. (you never know when you need help back!)

Boys dont hit the back of other cars whilst attempting to slam on the anchors lol

true...

I can't say I'm not worried about having 172HP in a car a little over a tonne with no ABS..........

I was even more worried when searching for insurance that many places refuse to insure 172 CUPs becasue of the lack of ABS.

Luckily I haven't had the privilege of ABS for 8 years so nothing new to me.

I can honestly say the only time i ever had to really slam the whole lot on was in my C2 GT when a most courtious woman driver pulled out from the hard shoulder to the fast lane doing less than 40mph...

I f**king shat it slammed the whole lot on, irritatingly enough that activated the hazards i hated that about it!

Welcome James,

I'm sure you'll find CS great, if you have any questions about anything just ask!

Just as a side not its 172 PS, not. I'm not trying to dash your hopes, just a common mistake!

Thanks mate, I'm sure I will take you up on that offer! I intend to join later tonight, and look forward to using the forum lots. :)

Sorry if I'm bing thicker than the village idiot - whats this mean -
Just as a side not its 172 PS, not. I'm not trying to dash your hopes, just a common mistake!

are you on about PS conpared to BHP??? I haven't mentioned that anywhere I don't think??:) :) :) PS is a higher measurement of power than BHP - hence car manufacturers love using it.
1 PS = 75 kp·m/s = 0.73549875 kW = 0.9863201652997627 hp (SAE)

Hi James - nice looking motor!

I was looking for a 172 Cup, before stumping up the extra and buying my 182 from new, back in 2004. I've had a soft spot for them ever since - especially as Chris (Chris 'n Nic on here) has let me have a go in his car a few times. Makes my 182 feel heavy, sluggish and too 'soft' in comparison.

Granted, he's had a fair bit done to it, but apart from the Renault badge - they are almost chalk and cheese!

You seem to have a similar train of thought as me with motors. If it doesn't need it - don't add it. If I want all the comforts, I'll look at a Lexus. If I want to get from A to B with a grin on my face, I want most of the 'toys' dumped!

Welcome. :)

Thanks Darren, I hope I can make a few freinds on here, I'm sure I will be swapping technical advice with members to keep the clio on the road :D :D :) :)

The lack of any extra's is somehting i've been used to for around 7/8 years now, its only a pity the CUP has electric wondows and PAS, altough I wouldn't fancy trying to turn 16's without it.
