Hi all,

I did have a progress thread going on here but I gave up on it back in august 2015, after reading through a few peoples threads on here recently I noticed they were done in quite a personal style and not all about the car so I thought I would give it a shot and redo mine.

So anyway my car history follows the pattern of most on here, bought a clio, bought something else, bought a clio, bought something else, that never ending pattern we all get stuck in (if you have no idea what I am on about trust me you will soon), this one is my fourth.

Some of my old cars:

Anyway on to the clio, I started having a look as I fancied having one, my spec requirements were anything but black and preferably something with a couple of mods already done as I'm tight and it would save me money, here's what I ended up with:

Yep totally standard and black, bugger.

It was a great buy though with the following:

One owner (Who happens to share my surname)
88k
Both cup packs
Totally standard
Full renault history
Belts changed at Renault.

Next up I went on a trip down to Oulton Park.

My car sat looking like:

It was good to have a catch up with the other guys I have met over the years thanks to this site.

This happened on the way there too, best sell it, it's probably about to go bang:

I am close friends with two people who are big into their mini's, they actually have 5 between them, anyway we always go on trips out and shows together and I play backup car/ just generally crash the party, here's a few pictures from a run up to the lakes, Dent to be exact to visit a friend for pancakes.

Little car:

Little car:

Slightly bigger and not a mini car:

IMG_3163
by Paul Morgan, on Flickr

Once we decided that we were bored of looking like a scene from a low budget fast and furious we decided to set off, now anyone that has been out in a mini loves them, they wave, let you out of junctions and generally make your trips a pleasure, this is fantastic...unless you're in a different car following, nobody lets you out after the minis and you end up playing catch up constantly.

Anyway a good trip was had.

Next up a few more mods that would increase my cliosport cool points, getting there now!

New number plate bulb case and some led bulbs:

12012277863_dc287b1ddc.jpg

I think that was well overdue:

12012020705_c554f9cfa1.jpg

12177607034_b6346885cc.jpg

Yes that plate is manky and don't worry it does get replaced!

Also popped in some new led interior lights, I also have some to pop in my side lights when I get round to it:

12484063003_dfe73b5d1a.jpg

The car was then fully serviced and I picked up 4 Hankook V12 Evo tyres to stick on, ordered them from Camskill as usual and yet again faultless service from them.

12484421704_99768a17d6.jpg

I also have another little 'hot hatch' now to play with along with the Clio:

12484041543_8a06776701.jpg

12483894195_7f32c8a8f6.jpg

And how the clio currently stands:

Next up was brakes, I got them off the legend of a man that is George, as usual he smashed it.

I got brembo hc disks, mintex pads and superblue fluid, all delivered quickly and with no issues.

13450782065_0074910353.jpg

Queue the phonecall to my friend to pop round, 'I'll make us some tea and we'll get it done in no time at all".

Famous last words as usual and it took us about 4 hours, stupid car.

13450717975_d3f0e3d8e3.jpg

13450852473_864725dcf1.jpg

The disk retaining bolt decided it was happy in the disk and rounded off, so a quick phone call to my other friend had him turning up with the drill and metal drill bits, two of them drilled out fine however the final one of the drivers side decided to fight back and the drill bit ended up snapped in the retaining bolt (by this stage I really hated torx bolts).

13510019425_a37d0d2b30.jpg

We dashed to B&Q and picked up a nice new chisel then came back and set about hitting it until it finally started to turn then eventually came out.

13464382875_668b84e523.jpg

13464500533_4cc42131fc.jpg

Finally built back up:

13464719734_a2224ea3f4.jpg

Got it all back together and went and got my feet up while huffing and puffing and muttering under my breathe for about an hour.

A bit of a random section now because I'll compress parts of my old thread where I started to chat rubbish.

Went back to Oulton Park and took some pretty pictures:

Then the car got cleaned again and went to the 3 Sisters roadshow, for people that now attend the track attack days there this was the very first day they opened and trialed that format, i guess that makes me an OG right?

A couple of pictures from the day:

Then a new steering wheel went on to replace the one that currently looks like a rottweiler has been having a go at it.

14835001258_0c224b4cc1_z.jpg

IMG_4173 by theycallmepaul, on Flickr

And a scorpion RS192 went on, thought I would release my inner child so I also put a non res centre section on it (not shown in these pictures).

I had to polish it before hand to satisfy my ocd:

And finished:

I also completed the final Cliosport mod, I have finally made it to the top of the tree!

Next up I played with my go pro:

And then I decided to take the headlight washer jets off, these haven't worked since I bought the car but I've been too lazy to do anything about them.

Anyway bumper off, washers off and I also removed the fog lights to start some brake ducts, thought I may as well while I had it apart.

As I begrudge paying £50+ for some washer blanks at present I bought some 99p 16mm grommets off ebay, I actually quite like them fitted.

Next up I thought I would have a bit of arts and crafts time and tart up the interior a bit.

I decided to go with a dark anthracite with red detailing.

I haven't sprayed anything in a long time but I used to do it quite often so I was hoping I could still manage to get a good finish.

Before/after comparison.

I was very happy with the outcome considering it has been about 2 years since I sprayed anything properly.

And after over 18 months I finally pulled my finger out and bought new clean plates to fit!

Next up Cliosport Saturday 2016.

I wanted to book track time, I didn't book track time, I stood on the banking taking pictures of the people enjoying their track time, I won't make this mistake next time.

My day started well, my arch liner fell out on the M62 which lead to me running half of it over and dragging the rest along with me:

Then I started my prep for the upcoming Nurburgring trip.

But first I decided I would do some more pimping in the engine bay, I sprayed the inlet/fuel rail guard in anthracite.

21123959971_f8153a76a9.jpg
IMG_6596 by Paul Morgan, on Flickr

The rear brakes were also way past it so I have replaced those, I sprayed all the calipers/carriers silver while I was changing them and I have also fitted new cup shocks all round along with Eibach sportlines so that's all nice and fresh now.

Fronts built back up, excuse the fact the car is dirty (The arches were filthy)

Then I went back to Oulton and did a comparison shot:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/wTDo4o]IMG_6498 by Paul Morgan, on Flickr

And this is how it stands, the springs have settled a bit lower now but I haven't got any more up to date pictures, it now sits perfectly for me, I'm not sure I would want it any lower than the sportlines sit, I was in two minds whether it would be enough but it is spot on for what I wanted.

Nice write up. And nice pics. And it looks like you've had a load of fun with this car

I didn't know it was you who had the 1.6! I used to love that back before I knew you.

... That came out wrong. Or I don't like it now because I know you lol.

Good to hear you're coming on track at CSF this year :D

I really like how much of a clean, unmolested, well cared for example it was when you bought it. Seems like that kind of honest condition is very rare nowadays. The paint also looks great.

Love the write up.

As you said, these project threads seem more personal rather than just pics of car parts. It's more a little story.

Excellent work so far too Paul :)

Great thread and well written, keep up the updates! :grinning:

The car looks great though with some nice additions here and there, very oem+ ........... love that go-pro photo!

I'll hunt it down if that's what it takes for you to like me haha! Yes had the two 1.6's and a black 1.2 which I had when I was a lost child and it ended up with an orange front diamond and orange dash strips etc, luckily I shook that phase off!

I really like how much of a clean, unmolested, well cared for example it was when you bought it. Seems like that kind of honest condition is very rare nowadays. The paint also looks great.

Thanks! unfortunately as a future update will show the car isn't currently as clean, It has had 2 hit and runs done on it over the last few months resulting in scrapes on the front bumper, drivers front wing and drivers door, I do however have a set of freshly resprayed front wings to go on and I'm currently on the watch for a bumper, the door may be slightly more problematic but I'll solve it somehow :).

But yes I got very lucky stumbling across it, it was a demonstrator at Lookers in Chester for 6 months then one guy owned it right through until 2013 when I purchased it, looking at the owner history you would think it was a family owned car, I couldn't believe it when I noticed we both had the same surname!

Love the write up.

As you said, these project threads seem more personal rather than just pics of car parts. It's more a little story.

Excellent work so far too Paul

Thanks Mark, like you say reading through more recent threads, particularly Dans thread about Boris made me like the way they were put across so thought it would be fun to try that approach, I read through mine the other day and it was quite frankly boring, once I get all the information across into this thread I'll get a mod to delete the old one and try and actually keep this one up to date with pictures, I have quite a few more updates to add on :).

Great thread and well written, keep up the updates! :grinning:

The car looks great though with some nice additions here and there, very oem+ ........... love that go-pro photo!

Thanks a lot for the kind words :), yeah I like the go pro one too, it was more luck than skill that it came out that well, I was testing the time lapse fuction and though ooh that looks good!

Lovely BG mate! It's like i'm seeing my own car sometimes haha. What's next?

I thought the same when I read your thread! It's my cars brother from another erm dealership? ( I really wish that rhymed!).

Next up will be fixing the result of 2 hit and runs as mentioned in one of my replies above, get the car tidy again and then got a few shows and drives out with a close bunch of friends that all have awesome cars so we should be able to get some good pics between us, I'm also hoping to arrange a road trip out to stay at my brothers in germany and a visit to the frankfurt motorshow later this year so that should be fun!

Great write up and the car looks very tidy. I really need to order some elbow grease and get mine polished up!

It's so worth the effort! I love it when it is nice and clean.....it's a brilliant 5 miles, then it is dirty again haha.

Great write up and truly lovely looking car, in some ways it's a shame you modded it at all. Even down to the bulbs. But if I did mention that it would be very much pots and kettles so I'll stay quiet :)

No I totally agree, it would have been lovely to keep it totally standard like you say, but we are boys and these are our toys and all that!

A lot of things were done because of good old fashioned man logic, my original exhaust fell off so I thought why not go asbo, my rear shocks were at the point of leaking and needed replacing so I thought why spend more money and go sportlines instead of reusing the perfectly fine and adequate cup springs, you know how it goes :).

Great read.

Do you mind me asking where you got the paint for your inlet from, it looks like a lovely colour and I would love to copy!!!

I think it was this stuff: Paint

I'm pretty sure I still have the can at home so I'll double check after work for you as I'm not 100% sure it was the above stuff, It does look good but I would have liked it to be a bit more of a metallic look, I'll get a better picture for you as well :).

Right next up a few of you might have noticed the Mk1 MX5 sneaking into some of the photos, this was an accidental purchase of mine, well when I say accidental I wanted another project anyway but I went out to get some chips one dinner, saw it and ended up coming back to work with a deposit receipt, I knew I should have gone to the other chippy!

Here it is next to ol' faithful:

Anyway this put the clio plans on hold for a while because I got stuck in to the '5 like an excited little kid.

I bought it looking like:

Then tidied it up a bit so it looked like:

IMG_3964

Then after a year or so I finally got it looking how I wanted it, and loved it:

Then I took it down to Three sisters for a session, I had to keep up my OG status didn't I:

Anyway that was the moment when I realised I was too big for it, I sat in my friends track one and even with the seat bolted to the floor I was over the roll cage and wouldn't have enough room within a hard top to wear a helmet.....so I sold it to a friend who then went full scene on it and rattle canned it matt black with sticker bomb vinyl everywhere and a dildo gear shifter, sorry car!

It was fun while it lasted though!

A word of warning, it wasn't the best of paint for spraying with so I would suggest light coats until you see how it comes out, I went in a bit ham fisted and it took me by surprise .

Thanks for confirming the paint.

I really like the colour tbh and its looks like you've done a good job.

Colour of the paint and it's finish is actually really nice considering it's a VHT paint. VHT paint isn't really needed on there though, many have had no problems with normal paint.

Now this one may be a long read because I love the Nurburgring, you love the Nurburgring, we all the love the Nurburgring.

Right then you have probably guessed the destination for this trip so I won't type it again.

My friends and I try to do a trip to the ring every year/every other year however I have always just played passenger in one of their cars, this is actually quite a hard job, it's a nightmare trying to keep choosing fresh music for about 600 miles each way!

in fact it makes you take silly selfies with a friend that got roped into wearing nail varnish and a pink hat for the whole trip!

We stood slowly rocking back and forth for half an hour then got disembarked in France, now another friend of ours who was at a wedding in Brussels was meeting up with us so we decided to make it a bit fun and stop off at Brussels kart to meet up with him and have a couple of sessions:

My friend that we met up with raced in the e36 compact cup and has a lot of karting experience so we all argued amongst ourselves for second place and lower whilst he enjoyed a pretty much free track.

I highly reccomend stopping off there for anyone off to the ring, it was great fun and probably only a detour of about 15 minutes from the ring road.

Then the rest of the trip was wet:

We then had a nice 'family' tea with the guys who were sharing our house:

The next morning we went for a good look round, the area around the ring really is stunning:

Next up a little last minute preparation, for me this meant sitting watching the others do whatever they needed to do.

My friend with the abarth punto stripped all his interior out, my friend with the panda was working on mounting his go pro, the cycle mount was just slightly too large to go around the front grille...this was solved by him promptly walking into the house, grabbing one of his socks and cutting it up, genius! haha.

Attempt number one in progress:

And how many people does it take to cut up a sock, yep 4!

We got right into the swing of things before we even left the house, for the record I managed a quicker lap time of the lounge and kitchen, my shoes were slightly grippier though.

We all met up again before heading for laps of the GP track along with the Nordschleife.

Not sure if you can make it out due to potato cam being used but that black blob in the centre is my car on the GP track:

These guys were awesome, we spent ages talking to them, they were sadly not allowed on track, neither was my friend with the Panda until he removed his sock cam, after all that hard work as well!

We then went out and had a great meal, one of the downsides to being 6ft 5 is when you try and have a nice photo and the waitress cuts your head off on all three attempts of the same picture, maybe I look better this way anyway!

That draws another incredible week out there with a great bunch of friends, every trip is a success with the way every little problem is solved by a bunch of people who are in the same spirit and more than happy to help out, I strongly suggest every petrol head makes the trip out there, you don't even have to do any laps, just take in the atmosphere of the place :).

Thanks for confirming the paint.

I really like the colour tbh and its looks like you've done a good job.

No problem at all, as Louis says below a lot of people have nice results with normal paint, I wasn't aware of this at the time so used the VHT stuff out of caution.

Colour of the paint and it's finish is actually really nice considering it's a VHT paint. VHT paint isn't really needed on there though, many have had no problems with normal paint.

It was a bit of a pain to spray, I thought I was going to mess it up! If I was to do it again now I would use normal stuff with a nice metallic grey, I chickened out of trying the normal stuff at the time and now everyone is using it fine haha!

A few videos from the trip (they are all in 720p).

First of all the two sessions at Brussels kart:

The GP track laps, don't expect to watch massively fast laps, I've never had any experience on a wet track that was as slippy as this before!

And 2 laps round the ring, again probably driving at about 5/10ths for no other reason than the place scares me, more like sight seeing laps really.

5 minutes 50 seconds into the second video I get over taken by a beige Fiat 500L, that is a warning of how slow they were haha.

I wish I had gone quicker on my first lap, the top video because this was the only dry lap I got, gutted!

And finally two edits from the trip, the first is a shortened one as I realised I over did the go karting part of the full version:

Sorry for the 3 different posts, I could only put a maximum of 3 per reply.

Thanks a lot! It's an incredible place, everyone there is on the same page and other than the odd muppet (which you get everywhere) you can literally stop and talk to anyone.

Next up was Mega Mini meet, a yearly show that happens at Lytham hall, nice and local.

Remember my earlier post about me always crashing the mini shows? Well I did it again!

First we prepared his JCW coupe and the Clio ready:

They take an entry shot of each car, I never usually buy them but the one this year is one of my favourite shots ever of my car, ignore the cheesy grin, I realised I had my window down then panicked with what to do, do I smile or look serious? I settled on somewhere in the middle:

A few shots from the show, a few of my friends came down too so we managed to wrangle a little corner to set up the cars in:

Another great day out, anyone local to Blackpool it's worth popping down to if it's a sunny day, we have had sunny ones in the past and one year I even got burnt!

Next we took the car glamping! Yes my girlfriend wanted to go camping but she's a pansy so we did it in a shed instead.

We got there and it was wet:

We got up and it was snowy at which point I was quite pleased we went with the pansy option:

The pooch loved it though:

And we chilled in front of the fire with the food of the gods:

We had a great time, although I struggled slightly with the doors:
