Boot battery relocation cable

  Clio 182 FF
I've currently got my battery under the passenger seat. But as only using my car at weekends if that. The battery struggles when comes to start the car.

Looking to put my original battery in the boot. Been looking for ages on cable sizes, can anyone tell me if 300amps cable will be fine to use?

Also am I looking at around 3 metres of cable from engine to boot?

Would this cable be okay?

300Amps means f**k all tbh

you want to try and find the cross section area (either mm2 or A.W.G) to fine if it's right and also if it pure copper and not CCA (copper coated aluminium)

also i'd get a meter over what you think as you'd be pissed if you need 3.1m and only have 3m lol

i'd say not to the car audio direct cable as the insulation tends to be soft and it is CCA.

i'd just ask the seller of the first cable you posted what size it is and is it copper.

Does this mean anything to you?

I've emailed the seller to ask if it's cooper.

Why is getting cable so hard!

40mm2 is an odd size (i would expect it to be either 35mm2 or 50mm2)

it does look decent enough

Hi

Why don't you just buy a relocation kit ? There's loads on ebay and they come with all the parts you need.

The ones on eBay come with a cable diameter of 32mm if that's any help.

Hi

I have only recently re-located my battery to the wheel well in the boot and I used 50mm2 300AMP (AWG2) cable x 5M, straight from the original location in the engine bay to the wheel well. I have put a 300amp Audioline fuseholder/fuse inline, located by the battery, and I have had no issues so far.

There are a lot of posts on these forums related to the relocation of the battery, it took me a fair bit of searching to come up with the solution that I did, the main one being that if you use inadequate cable you could start getting starting problems due to the amps required. Also, getting a clean earth is key, so make sure that you are earthing to clean bare metal.

Thanks for the info,

Where did you end up purchasing the AWG2 cable. As when looking for it I always seem to go to American websites!

I got my cable from ebay, I have just checked where I got it from and it was vehicle-wiring-accessories (in Sept last year) but I cannot now get on their site. If you search ebay for 50mm2 battery cable you will get lots of results.

This is the fuse box I'm going to use with a 150amp fuse as close to the battery

And will this cable be okay to use for the positive and the negative.

I cannot guarantee that any of the above is suitable, I am not a car electrical specialist, but what you have listed appears to fit the bill. The only reservation that I would have is the fuse size as I have used a 300 AMP fuse as I did read somewhere that if this is too low you could blow the fuse when starting. I think its in one of the links that I posted above.

Did you use a terminal box in the engine bay?

Did you use a terminal box in the engine bay?

I used the original battery lead as there is some kind of fuse or something built into it, I removed the plastic cover first, and bolted it together with the new cable using an 8mm nut and bolt. I've got it housed in a plastic box at the moment, not fixed to anything yet, but it doesn't move around so I am not bothered atm.

I'm guessing my has the original fuse in it as well then. I just bolted the two leads on to the junction box and then the postive power lead for the battery.

Maybe someone should do a little shopping list for what people will need to move the battery in the boot.. ;)

This stuff I've got is pretty thick. I really hope I will get it through the hole with the bonnet release cable!

  Clio 182 FF
Got it all wired in today, before the heavens opened. Still need to bolt in the battery cage in the boot.

Just trying to work out the best place to bolt it now.

Starts lovely, just like it use to.

  Clio 182 FF
Bloody hell that cable is massive! Did you have any problems routing it through from the bay and through the inside?

Yes it's massive! Never going to have any problems with it drawing electricity on cold morning starts!

I struggled but got it through the grommet were the bonnet release cable goes through.

I did have to remove the passenger seat to get the cable through that section.

Haha I'd be surprised if you did!

I thought that may be the case, I found it a bit tight running a power cable for an amp past the seat.

Where did you get the battery tray btw?

  Clio 182 FF
On eBay... Costs £40 but it fits the battery perfectly. Looks pretty smart to. Going to cut out a rectangle on the boot mat when I get a chance to.

  Clio 182 FF
My question now is, what size fuse do I need to put on the cable! Anyone know?

Or does anyone know what my starter motor draw is on a very cold day?

  Clio 182 FF
The wiring/component would set on fire before that popped tbh mate. I'd go with a 200/250A mega fuse personally. That's what I use in mine and never had an issue.

Do I need one either end?

I was going put just one fuse closest to the battery.
