bought a 172 cup; don't even like money anyway.

So I've driven it around for a few months, modified it a bit blah blah, really truly excellent, favourite car ever etc etc.
lo and behold there's oil escaping my exhaust and nicely coating my back bumper.
already been told I need a new engine, fully expecting to be told again, but there's always praying, right?
numerous other issues not even worth mentioning.
if anyone would like to tell me that actually i really don't need a new engine, and it's a simple cheap fix that'd be excellent, but i am prepared for the worst. my wallet is not.

oh, the horror. roughly how long do i have?
it's not a raging torrent yet, but there's a fair bit of spatter after a half hour drive.
though, that's not half as bad as i was expecting, thank you. any advice on reputable sellers? (fully expecting to be ordered to read the faq)

Before you go changing the engine, get a specialist opinion, preferably from a dealer on here near you. they really know their stuff. Everyman garages are good at misdiagnosis on these cars.

You might be better off repairing your engine if its something like rings or stems, because you can't predict the internal condition of your new engine.
That and you would be doing belts and possibly clutch in any case :)

By the time he's paid labour to remove and refit engine - it'll be cheaper to drop another one in.
The labour cost to strip it down and replace rings etc... just isn't worth it

They come up all the time on here for £3-400 sometimes with belts and dephaser already done
Might even get some cash back from old engine if someones looking for one to strip and rebuild

can you not just replace the rings form the sump end with the engine in place? Mind you, if the bore is damaged, there will be little point doing so...

Go to Fred. Get confirmation new engine needed. Pay Fred to replace engine. Sell old engine to me for half a bag of wotsits ;-)

I don't think I would be doing anything to it until it was loosing power. Just keep it topped up with oil.
