BP Ultimate = rubbish

Not the same old boring discussion this time.

I was out and about the other day and got caught out - running very low and with no Shell garage anywhere near (that I knew of) - I reluctantly spunked about 20 squids worth of BP Ultimate (97RON) into the tank. A few miles later, the exhaust gas warning light came on.

At the time, I didnt really twig the connection with the fuel. Anyway, the next day I found a Shell garage and splashed some Optimax in there - exhaust light still on for the remainder of that day and most of the next.

At the next fill-up I topped her off with Optimax, started the engine and within 5 minutes the light was off and hasnt come back on since.

Anyone had a similar experience??

The only fuel i have ever used that made a noticable difference was that V power stuff shell sell in germany/mainland europe

Over here i cant help thinking we are being conned, so i keep using sainsburys 97.

That said ive had a toxic warning light issue due to a missfire almost since day one of ownership. HOPEFULLY it should be fixed when t goes in next week.

That V power stuff was great. Optimax is the only thing i use, just because i found the car lost something when using Ultimate. The kick went at 5k and it had a sloppy idle.

The whole process of buying fuel is a lottery.

My local shell station nearly destroyed my dads old S8 a few years back when the tanks became contaminated with derv.

They also had to close the place and replace the tanks due to more problems with water.

The sainsburys stuff i use comes in a BP tanker and my family use it in all the cars (From my uncles 997 to my dads punto) Never had any issues.

I have only used Ultimate from day one now,had my car a year now.

After the last debate i filled up with Optimax and not for the first time did not notice even a slight difference.

Vpower (100ron) does make differnce its so much more responsive and smoother. Only ever used Optimax.

  car? need a license 1st!

BP 95RON for the win!

I dont really think RON97/8 will make a difference in a 1.4RT will it??

I use either BP or Sainsburys 97 ron, havent experienced any probs and I get the kick when the cams come in about 4K.

When driving back from prague to salzburg i had to fill my rental car up and i saw 100/101 RON fuel on one of the pumps in czech republic and it was less than 25 crowns which = about 60 pence/ltr!! Was too late by the time i realised so i had to make do with 98!

BTW if you want to see some of the most gorgeous woman dancing in sod all go to prague, and order a Bomb - its a drink with Absinthe in it which turns you loopy :devilish:

I must admit recently the cars been getting allsorts, 95/97/98, but Ive stayed away from supermarket fuel. Never notice any difference tbh.

Filled mine up on BP Ultimate once (just for a change really)...and apart from being more expensive than my local Optimax...it ran like a pig...real bugger to start and was really ropey...might just of been a bad batch i suppose...either that or my car was copping a strop and being snobby !! LOL........either way i havent used it since....

The surge you get from about 4.5K rev upwards is much more pronounced when only using optimax ive found, with the ultimate i found it wasnt quite the same

Nope, only that after a few tank fulls it will help remove the deposits in the engine. you wont find any performance gains, maybe a little better economy

I have used BP Ultimeate in my bike once as i thought i mite aswell give it a go and see how it is.

the Result - Costed More; Did not last as long as normal Petrol; Made the bike feel sluggish!

I use Ultimate all the time.

Also Esso Supreme.

Considering mines Jap and is supposed to run on 100+ ron fuel it works perfectly ok.

So does anyone know why the exhaust gas lamp is likely to have come on? It definitely *seemed* like it was caused by the fuel...?

Ill use whatever is convienient when I need to fill up. Normally put in BP 95 but occasionally Optimax. TBH I have never noticed any difference in the performance of the car using 95/97/98 ron fuel.

  Fiat Coupe 20v turbo

My cars mapped for 97/98 ron so thats what I use..never noticed a difference between super/optimax/ultimate etc.

  1.8 Civic EX

I used ultimate and optimax in my valver. Made it run sweet for a few months but my god after a while........ kept stalling, un even idle was running like sh*t!! I had everything changed, battery, alternator, plugs leads, dizzy cap etc and it was still doing it. took it to several garages and none of them knew what was wrong. Started to use normal unleaded (95) and sorted it out straight away!!

I just use Sainsburys 97ron as its almost the recommended 98ron and its the same price as most 95ron stuff. Its all psychological.

Well not being funny but I didnt intend this thread to be the usual banter about Optimax. In my case I actually had a fault occur with the car...whether or not the fuel was the cause seems unclear and even less likely, but it definitely seemed to be a factor...maybe there is an underlying fault - such as with a sensor thats already been suggested? :)

I heard Optimax is refined to 95 RON then has Octane Booster mixed with it to bump it up to 98 RON, downside is it loses its RON rating if sat in the tanks for a while.

Esso BP e.t.c Super Unleaded is refined to 97 RON with no octane booster added.

Thats what i heard from a bloke works in the industry. :)

  Yaris Hybrid

I have only ever used Optimax but that didnt stop my exhaust light coming on and going off on its own a few days later.

The story about Optimax being made up of Octane boosters that evaporate and leave you with 95 RON fuel is an urban myth no doubt created by Shells rivals.

The fuel you get from the pumps will be at least 98RON and unless you leave it in your car for absolutely ages in poor conditions it will not lose that rating.
