brake disk corrosion on 172 cup

  BMW 330d :)
Has anyone else had problems with bad corrosion on the disks of a 172 cup, (particularly the back)? Ive just had the rear disks replaced under warranty as one of them cracked when driving after 10000 miles and they are already in a bad state! Its just been in for a service and they are saying that the rear pads are 40% worn after 3 months?

Surely the corroded disks are wearing the pads more quickly!

Does anyone also have problems with sticking rear pads when the car is parked up in the rain?

Cheers

Before you set off to work in the morning apply grease to all 4 discs - this will help prevent future rust development

pmsl ^^^^^

And you wont need to worry about any front end mods, they will come, Probably on the first bend you approach

Disc's will always rust, Just drive the car regular Mine are rusted to fook if I leave it for a week get that nice grinding sound for the first couple of miles. I dont think the rust is causing your pads to ware out quickly I would say thats its more to do with being over enthusiastic with the middle pedal.

On a serious note - trade price for a set of pads is £25 + vat and you can fit them yourself in about 20 minutes....it is such a simple job !!! so if you need to change them every 6 months its not really gonna break the bank is it ?

Same again with brake discs - trade price for a set of front and rear is about £175 + vat and again can be fitted with ease in about 1hr. If you learn to do them yourself ( which is half the fun of motoring ) you will save a lot of money in the future. Changing discs and pads regularly is one of the downfalls of owning high powered sports cars. Theres not a lot you can do about corrosion - they are made of steel and when you add water into the equation this results in rust

  Weeman sucks ****
Yeah mine do that aswell. The rear discs are renound (sp) for being a bit pants. Mine always stick if I leave them for a while, best thing to do is leave it in gear and leave the hand brake released.

Don't think they do much apart from use with the handbrake tbh. The fronts take all the weight.

I'm on my 2nd set in 62,000 lol. Need changing pretty soon.

mine are rusting to . but mine dont look to be wearing either . it's booked in at reno on monday for the 24k service so i have asked them to check this out as i am sure there not working properly .

Are u renault salesman by any chance? Exactly the sort of comment I got off them! And you should know that the front brakes take most of the braking bias and they are only 10% worn!

I know that... But they dont seem to last long! Its probably due to the design of the turinis as well which let the elements get to the disks more than they would on the normal 172.

When my car is out of warranty these definitely would be the first thing i'd upgrade... Some brembos with feroddo pads... Oh and some coilovers....

You must have the ONLY Cup that has rear brakes that actually do anything.

After over 52k miles on mine I'm still on original pads at the back...and I'm definitely NOT easy on the brakes, especially after a dozen or so hard trackdays.

I get the rusting/binding everyday too, and most days the rust is still there after a 30 mile drive to work.

WTF? 52k miles? Have you had the rear pads checked at all? You probably wont have any rear brakes! Have you noticed the front pads are needing replaced alot more frequently? ;)

I've got at least 50% still to go at the back and I'm on my 3rd set at the front.

The bias is soooo towards the front which suits track work perfectly...any more at the back and the inside rear would lock everytime while trail-braking at turn-in.

my rear pads a are good n there on 44k, fronts have had two sets, look like renault have ur bias valve the wrong way round lol

I hope not or my car would be doing backward flips!

Makes me wonder exactly how worn the pads are........ How can they say they are 40% worn after 3k miles?

Pad thickness?

My brakes always bind up a bit if the car has been sitting for a while.....bit alarming when you go to reverse out of the garage and there's a big bang as they release!

Oh yeah, don't compare the rear pad thickness with the fronts...as new the rear pads are a lot thinner...i'd say probably around 1-2 cm thick.

Yeah well at least one of your rear disks didnt snap when driving! And I had only done 10k miles! Lucky the whole wheel didnt come off!

All these problems with brakes doesn't make me feel good.....have to keep an eye on them.

Hope you get them sorted

My cup has exactly the same thing....
when the weather is a bit damp, in the morning (after being sat for 1 night) theres a bang as the rear brakes crack off the discs!
And after driving any distance there are still rust rings around the rear discs!!

I'm just treating it as the norm now... although i might try to get some new discs & pads before the warranties out.... can try can't i :)

Yeah well it takes a bit of arguing but u will get them replaced eventually under warranty especially if they snap like mine did!

And neil i dont think it helps that my car is not garaged at all, especially in scotland where you get rain almost every day!

Maybe the garage will fit brembos for me though ;) What do u think? ;)
