brake kits

  172 cup
Hi all i'm new to this site, just got myself a clio cup172 :) I want to find new and better brakes for it because of how quickly they fade. I'm very happy with the feel of the pedal ie how little i need to put my foot down before the brakes kick in and i'd like to keep that, but stopping from high speeds is a nightmare! I'm after a full kit including discs, pads callipers (i want them to look good as well as perform) and i'll get some braided brake lines as well but after using the search function i can't find alot of feedback on the different 4 pot kits. Can anyone suggest any brake kits for me? Preferably tried and tested. Thanks

Hi Harry, Fuckin' hell I sound like Ron Weesley from Harry Potter,

Anyway if your taking your 172 to track days then I would say go for the wilwood 4 pot conversion, if not then you should save yourself alot of cash and go for the setup I have got on the front, which are:-

Brembo max discs and mintex 1144 fast road/race pads

I also have goodridge stainless steel braided hoses all round and on the rear:
K Tec cross drilled discs with EBC Greenstuff pads. Mine stops fine!

i am hoping to do some track days. Is there a link to the willwood set up or does anyone already have them that can say what they think? Can anyone compare them to hi-spec/brembo/compbrake/k-tec/ap racing's 4 pot set ups? Thanks!

ive got some wilwood 4 pots for sale, from my williams. come with mintex 1144 pads, used for 6 weeks, and braided hoses. stop you like a bugger, but pads do squeel a little. a great upgrade. you may need to get different brackets made up, but im sure someone here could help.

ill be able to tell you what my new ap 4 pots are like next week!

OTT to be honest, I figured as tried and tested for a long time that decent discs, lines and pads are all u need with the clio unless you are going for major power gains which is unlikely lol!

Im new to the site too, and have a 172 ph1, and noticed the exact same problem slowing down from speed...
Im looking to go to the nurburgring this summer, what do you guys reckon? full brake change over or a similiar set up to Mark, and go with new discs and pads?

Im a student and therefore not made of money haha!

So that kit is going to stop me all day long from whatever speed i'm going at right?! How do those breaks affect the feel of the pedal? Can anyone give me any info on whether these are better than http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=295387&highlight=group+buy ??
And the link is much appreciated so thanks alot guys for the help :)

I have had the compbrake kit fitted for about 12 months on my daily driver.

Theres no getting away from the fact that the pedal travels further then standard and even after bleeding them numerous times the pedal is also softer.

I went through aset of pads in 7 months having just changed them this weekend it was a real b**ch to ease the calipers back. Took a couple of hours!

However they are well made and are a lot lighter then the OEM setup (10kg per corner I think) and finally after a new set of pads and another bleed they are a starting to feel acceptable.

The Willwood kit has issues with the bracket I think and the pads not fully touching the disk. The compbrake kit gives you a two piece bigger disk and is all made in house at Compbrake (specialists) unlike the GDI kit.

I probably havent given them a brilliant report but for road use I wouldnt go back to standard.

there are 2 main differences between those two kits,

1) the GDI kit is £650 and u need to use standard 280mm disks or brambo HC or Max, the compbrake uses a 295mm bell and rotor set up which is much better.

2) The calipers ... the wilwoods have dirt seals which is much better for road use, the compbrake is a race caliper so no dirt seals

If i wasnty getting the AP's made I would have gone for the compbrakes because of the disks, to get the bell and rotor system pictured with the GDi kit its a lot more money. As far as im aware there is a lot more pad choice available for the compbrakes

The pads should clamp more of the disk then they do on the willwoods, see below how far the rust line is away from the inside of the disk which to me is showing up poor bracket design.

Like I said guys I have never used any 4 pot brakes in my life nor drove a car with any on. I have heard nothing, but good reports from PGTI mag when they had their cup fitted with the wilwood conversion. As I am in no rush to get my car to a track I think I will stick to the Brembo/Mintex combo I have on at the moment.

interesting debate...

the wilwood kit is desiged to..

use std size discs to allow cheaper replacment parts when you wear out the discs, (£57 for pair of brembo HC discs!)
the caliper cant go any closer to the hub without loosing strength in the bracket (you loose a small amount of swept area due to this, about 1mm)
pads choices are pagid and mintex

the kit works well with suitable pads (like all brakes),

there are other solutions to this fo course, however the customer we have sold this to are more than happy with it.

(however we dont sell it with the willwood pads anylonger).. we supply Mintex

interesting that point, i've never seen a kit from anyone (hispec, AP, Brembo, comp, Baer, stoptech, tarox, ksport, "insert any other name here") that has the calipers mounted the way the wilwood is mounted (at a slight angle)

did an engineer tell you that about the bracket?

(honest question, i'm not starting a row or anything!)
