Brake pad fitting Questions....

  BMW M3
Hi there,

Just got a couple of Q's,

Fitted my new ds2500s today and had no probs with the left side except that the old and new pads seem to be sitting 'over' the lip and not inside of it. The lip sticks out about 2-3 mm's so not too sure if the disc needs replacing. Same on the other side too so my question is.... is it meant to sit on the lip and when do they normally need changed.

2nd question is.... does the squeal plate have any other use and is it ok for one side not to have one and for the pads to move up and down a bit (1-2mms) Couldnt get the caliper back down with the squeal plate on the drivers side.

Tested them earlier with some light braking and initially they were really crap even once warm and then after 20mins they suddenly got pretty good but dont want to push them too far.....so a bit confused lol.

Anyone able to shead some light on my questions?

Thanks Guys

Justin

Don't usually sit ont eh lip unless they are slightly bigger than the pads in before

The squeel plate stop brake squeel PMSL.....shoudl really have it in, just push teh caliper piston back in a bit more, lol

You need to bed new brake in or they will be s**t lol, esp with them sat on teh lip of the disc, that part will ahve to wear down before the rest of the pad contacts the disc

Right.... so the lip is no problem then? Will just wear down accordingly?

Dont think you have understood right...sorry. It fits fine over the piston but doesnt swing down enough to get the lower bolt in. And so needed to take the sqeal plate out.

BTW. I know the squeal plate is to stop it squealing, but asked if it had any "other" use..lol

Thanks

Jus

Never heard of themn refered to as squeel plates before, if i'm on the right wave length they are just springs that stop the pad moving vertically....and just push them down and open teh springs up lol....just a big of force ;)

Most of the non-Renault pads are quite difficult to fit with the metal shims in at the top and bottom.

I've had the same problem as you in the past. If you cant get the bottom bolt back in the caliper then taking these out will help.

I never use them with the pads i use, just fit the pads directly into the caliper. Have never had any problems, just put plenty of copper grease on the back of the pads.

Cheers Nik, Just a bit weird as the left side went in no probs and the right didnt. Suppose its normal for aftermarket products. Have put quite a lot of copper grease on so hopefully will be fine.

Lunner: Its not the springs either mate.... the plates that go below and above the pads once in the caliper. Thin metel things....

Must be an odd new fangled contraption, mk1 clios and 1.2 mk2 clios just have springs, and they are attached to the pads lol

You need this so your pad slides smoothly otherwise it might bind on the mounting bracket .Just sounds like the pads are a little bit bigger than the originals to me . If thats the case just file 1 or 2 mm off the end , try it again until it moves freely !

Thats the ones!!!

I tried filing for ages but wasnt happening and i needed the use or the car soon so decided to take them out. Plenty of copper grease though so i'm hoping they should be fine.

i think ya need a better file and 3 shredded wheat , lol ;) I'd look at puttin em back in in the near future in case all the sh*t n brake dust makes em bind on the caliper mounting bracket . I've had to file brake pads before to get em in .

Yeah... think i will soon. I did have to file the bottom of the backing plate but the side seemed more difficult.

Cheers Bud !"!!

The last two sets of front pads I've gone through were fitted without those poxy clips.

I've had no problem whatsoever with performance or binding, and I cover 24k miles a year.

I'd say if it's tight, leave 'em out.

The choice is purely personal ! But i would say that brake caliper manufacturers do lots of rigorous testing and if they didn't serve a purpose they wouldn't fit them . Personally i'd just file some off the brake pad and leave em in .
