brakes query (i dont understand!)

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
hi all im new to renaults and need your help very fast

i just did the brakes on a friends clio diesel.

now when i put the new pads back on the front they stick out half a cm from the disk. the old set up was rotten but the pads sat right in on the hub. (the rear of the disk had collapsed from the same distance as the pad sticks out passed the disk)

now the new stuff going on is exactly the same as the old stuff but the pads are confusing me......the brakes are now fine but how dangerous is this? the pads are competley enclosed......do they slide down the disc after some wear and tear or whats the deal???

is this normal?

basically the whole pad isnt in conatct with disk, but the parts are identical to those taken off. they were sat in same position in caliper but were a lot close to the hub. do french cars tend to push the pads in over time??

first ive seen it on any car but this is first diesel renault ive touched!!!

ps its a Y reg clio diesel
help lol

ps check the pic of the rear of the disk thats just corroded lol.......the corrosion is the same as the amount of pad that isnt in contact with disk....huge pic sorry

no mate it brakes fine (surprisngly it didnt brake before)

id be more worried if dirt and crap could get in at the top of the pads but the enclosure stops it just worried if its normal or not to stick out? then as they wear slide in towards the hub.

thanks for fast reply

im confused.

do the pads line up with the discs? the whole of the pads braking surface should have contact with the disc when braking.

No, they dont "slide across" with age... but they do have auto pad wear adjustment.

err, hope that helps.

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
no they dont line up which is whats confusing me

the pads actually stick out passed the edge of the disk

however the car beakes fine - everything goes togethor as it should theres nothing loose or ill fitting. the wear on the old brakes matches what wear id expect from the new stuff ive put on.

i just dont get why the edge of the disk the the pads done line up

so basically is the car safe at this point? has anyone else ever come across this problem??

i wouldnt be happy with the pads like that, especially on the front.

are you sure they are the correct pads?

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
yeah they are identical to the ones that came off.

but the ones that came off sat further towards the hub and were flush. they are sitting in exactly the same position as the old ones too!

disks were exactly the same size too as replaced

any suggestions what to do? the old brakes are far too knackered to put back on

You need the clean out the caliper bracket bit the bad deposites material all around it.
Also you may need the file off a bit of material from the pads as some pad types don't sit right.

yeah i took a wire brush to caliper as always and cleaned them out. they sit in the exact position as they should in the caliper carrier but just dont sit flush with the disc when everythings tightened up.

i think the pads might be too thick for the set up just now? is this possible?

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
forgot to say it came in kit form and in checking the makers website the pads are completely different for both sets. and i have the right pads.....

ill double check in morning though but if disks are right size and calipers clean why aint they sitting flush??

The disk size should be 259mm .The disk size for a 1.2 8v is 238mm . Did you order the disks for the vehicle or did you measure the disks and order the same size as the ones that were fitted .

The whole area of the pad should be in contact with the disc , usually leaving a couple of mm on the outer edge of the disc where usually over time a lip builds up .

You've either got too small discs or the wrong pads cos they shouldn't stick out past the edge of the disc .

i just fitted the parts - but suspected dodgy parts!they were ordered against engine type...ive double checked the order with the manufacturers site.the disks appeared to be the correct size but ill check again. disk to brake pad is about right but i just cant get the pad to sit right in on the diskill check again in daylight thanks for info

I thought it sounded strange . Glad you got to the bottom of the problem ,lol ;)

yeah it was really weird - the disks are so similar in size i just kinda glanced the new stuff over the old stuff

the pads are the same for both

strange design (youd have thought theyd not bother with such small difference in dimensions for the disks)

old disks were shot (see pic) but ive cleaned the are up where the pads contact.

thanks for info people should be ok till he gets right disks!
