Well I picked this Phase 1 172 up a week or so ago. I seen it on Auto trader and noticed the car as being local. I also recall seeing it kicking about Edinburgh from time to time; I also knew where it stayed lol
Anyway I don’t need another car but had a feeling it would be a good one and I fancied a little project, I went to view the car on a Sunday and having just spent a good couple of hundred pounds on the Audi for a service and just booked a holiday on the Saturday I was thinking to myself I was being a fool! Anyway it now sits in the lock up.
It’s a black Phase 1 172 (x plate), it’s had the same owner for over 10 years (makes sense and is something which is always appealing) he bought it off his best mate from new. It’s done just over 64,000 miles; cambelt was done around 52k but is coming up for over 5 years in about 5/6 months, various stamps in the book (not full) and all MOT certificates and books etc.
It’s fairly standard minus the sub and amp, this was put in by the first owner and in fairness was the thing to do in 1999/2000! I can let that one slip. Also has a K-Tec exhaust as the older exhaust was rotten so the owner which I bought it off found this as a cheaper replacement.
My intentions - It will go one of two ways either a track car or to tidy it up and make it OEM – I’d imagine it will be the latter.
Anyway pictures of the car as it stood and with its cooler beefed up brother:

I then went about cleaning it up but before this the years of dirt/grime and moss

Before the cleaning began, I removed the sub/amp thing from the boot – it’s a beast:

Also tried fitting it into my best mates S2 (didn’t work L )

Car also came with the original mats which I was very pleased about as they are rare in the blue and I also noticed the rear spare wheel as never been used or possibly touched which again is a positive:

I then went about removing the plates for cleaning and the side strips.

That’s it for now. I will try my best to keep this as up to date as I can. I enjoy reading these build threads and in particular @Phase1sr @dann2707 @Dr Jekyll @williamsclio1 so thanks!
