Any (PC-)BSD users on here?

Having recently swapped Ubuntu for openSUSE I'm now thinking of swapping openSUSE for PC-BSD.

Read a lot and seen a lot of screenshots but has anyone actually had any experience of running either PC-BSD or other variants?

Free, Open, Net, yea..

Definetly seem more orientated to server setups.. and they always seem to have good server hw support (FreeBSD anyway).

After using Linux (Debian) for near on 8 years, I find it hard to switch to anything else.. it's just too good ;)

PC-BSD is supposed to be more desktop orientated and is based on FreeBSD.

The only downside that I can see at the moment is limited applications, everything I currently use is available on it though.

If anyone has any fairly long term desktop experience I'd be interested to hear from you.

lol I was waiting for someone to chime in with that :rasp:

BSD = Berkeley Software Distribution

I'll probably be installing PC-BSD over the weekend (downloading now) so I'll post back on how things go, just in case anyone is even remotely interested ;)

Well, after a dodgy start (had to change AGP aperture size to 128mb) that had me puzzled for a fair while, things are now doing ok.

PC-BSD is an absolute doddle to install as is extra software.
The easy way to install extra software is by using the pbi packages, which are a simple double click and follow the install wizard, much like windows.

The system is noticebly faster than Linux, in startup, running and shutdown.

The only thing I am currently having issues is my Audigy 2 ZS. It appears it's using the correct driver but I have no sound.

ALSA is Linux only.

I have absolutely no idea whether it's OSS or ARTS.

I can't find anything that says?!

Your gonna need to figure out what sound system your using before you can diagnose the problem.

It was OSS.

I've given up I'm afraid, been at it nearly 2 days and not been able to resolve the issue so I'm back on suse!

It was as though something was muted as the driver was correct but so were all the volumes.

I know its common for the mixers to be muted initially.. maybe you missed something.. ack was worth the experiment anyway.

I think next time I'll try it with an SB Live card. It's just a shame I gave my spare to my mrs's dad else I could have tried. Only other one I have is in the mrs's machine heh

Still, it's nice to be back on suse :)

It's not just pretty either, you can move your open apps between the view points and increase / decrease view points.
