Burpspeed Version 2: Race Car Build

  182cup & 172 racecar
Feels much better now Fred, inside wheel didn't lock up(well not in the carpark anyway)just got to take some camber out jobs a good un.
Did you get my text?

  172 Race Car
We have stiffer front springs than we started with so can run less camber after checking tyre temps at Snetterton end of last season. we struggled to slow it down at Snett as were only running on the insde edges of the tyres so less rubber touching the ground in a straight line.

We wont know exactly how much we need to take out untill weve run the car and done some temperatures

trial and error as with all these things I suppose. Presumably you're going to do some pre-season test though?

you ever thought of adjusting the tyre pressure to suit the camber? Can i suggest you try it as it is before you undo my work! haha

I will be at mallory to assist the setup more as i think you need some face to face advise/technical assistance rather than the mixed/conflicting points of view you've had so far

the camber wont massivley affect the braking performance (especially now) as the weight transfers the tyre will compress, dont forget the tyre is a part of the suspension, it is your main spring in theory

On another note, Burpspeed 3rd driver is making his way up the junior racing ladder.............

17th April 2011 - A Rush To Get ready

We have been planning on some gearbox changes for a while. We had a spare box hanging around and got it stripped over the winter. This was from an early 172 (I think it was the box from the old track car) so it has a taller, less desirable, final drive ratio. It was too much effort to make it work so we decided to find a later box to use. One came our way very cheap and through Curtis at AST suspension we sourced a ATB differential from Quaife.

We have a big window in our race calendar this summer and originally planned to leave it till then, when we had plenty of time to fit and test it. But after some serious thought and a look at the time scales, we decided to go for it and try and get it done for Brands. The benefits are too great to wait.

So the box was stripped at our gearbox specialists, Agency Transmissions of Worcester and it was in a bad way. That's why it was cheap. Luckily the crown-wheel and pinion were ok so we sent off the old diff to Quaife. They needed to remove the crown-wheel and fit it to the new diff. This is an engineering job and is the reason Clio/Renault diffs are more expensive than other cars where they are bolted on.

Our timescale was tight but if it all went to plan we would be fine. It arrived back and was rushed up to Worcester where Martin at Agency did a superb job to rebuild the box in just a few hours. Legend!

We set aside a day to do the swap and when I arrived Tony had already made a start. Its far easier for us to take the engine and gearbox out the top as one unit. We built the car with this in mind and in less than an hour the engine was out.

A new clutch went in and the new gearbox fitted to the engine. With the lump out we could have a good check around the engine bay for anything wrong. It was all fine although we did find that the alternator drive belt had eaten through the lower timing belt cover. We swapped it for a spare one we had. Another result of the rubbish alternators we were running last season.

Engine and box back in and all plumbed back in pretty quickly. Then set about making a new additional engine mount. After the single mount on the drivers side broke at Snetterton we decided it needed some more support. we coppied the idead from 'Rig Up Racing'. ;)
A small hole needed to be made in the subframe to fit this. Older Clios have a hole already. The rubber mount is from a Renault 5 that uses an engine with the same 'F' series engine block, but the bracket is no longer available from Renault. A bracket had to be made in the usual Burpspeed way, by using any thing we could find lying around. An old TV stand and some off cuts of roll cage.

After many, many attempts we settled on a design template and made up a permanent version. Fits very well and does the job nicely

Another thing to fit was a gear leaver 'stiffener' kit we had been supplied by Division Performance (www.dp-automotive.hu) 'Yanoo' on here. It significantly reduces the slop and free play in the standard gear lever assembly. Very well made, and quite simple to fit (we made it difficult by loosing the instructions)

Off to Mallory Park next week to give it a proper test. Looking forward to seeing how it all goes.
