Burpspeed Version 2: Race Car Build

Definately, although my interest in finding the cause means we can all have a more reliable season if its something that'll affect our cars too.
Russ
With regards to the flywheel Russ, the ONLY reliable way to lighten a standard flywheel is to replace it with a proper billet item imo. The oe cast item will always be running the risk of suffering from fatigue, and let's be honest, who's going to remove the gearbox after every race to check it? No one. The heat cycles will gradually change the composition of the material.

Got to wait until Martin looks at gearbox, for all I know, that might have seized and sent everything flying. All speculation atm.

Just caught up on this Tony. Absolutely gutted for you to say the least!

Hopefully you can get it all sorted sharpish and get back out there again.

Gearbox is now at Agency Transmissions.
Martin didn't seemed too phased by the mess, said he was expecting my phone call.
News travels fast!
Going to check diff first priority.

Rather than starting another thread I know most racers read each others threads..

Anyway best place to buy extinguisher nozzles before I pay the 35quid each that Merlin want..

There are ARP PRO flywheel bolts available for this engine, these give a better location of the flywheel and can be re-used, £11 each bolt sound like cheap insurance.
was the flywheel still in one piece around the crank bolt holes ?
Were there any remains of the flywhel bolts in the end of the crank ?
I would be fitting a steel flywheel with ARP bolts, cheaper than a replacement gearbox and re-blocking the engine.

Steve

PS Just for BigGash, the bolts, standard or ARP will need shortening when using a flywheel for a 7 1/4 race clutch

Yes flywheel was still in one piece around the bolt holes.

Yes there were some bits of bolt heads left kicking around.

Now seems Renault have decided to discontinue the Phs1 driveshafts, more problems!!

Ffs I binned off the ones I had from the donor although they looked far from New!

Sounds like the flywheel bolts came loose or failed for what ever reason.
I know you are on a budget, but speak to Mark, £330 buys a steel flywheel and ARP flywheel bolts, looking at that mess, probably in your case the best insurance money can buy.

Any idea what the cause was? Has anyone had a good look at the bolt fracture surfaces for signs of fatigue? You might be able to spot them with the naked eye, check the bolts and around the flywheel bolt threads first. Pray the fracture face didn't get clatted in the ensuing chaos!

Diff from exchange box (thanks Jamie) is now at Gripper, they'll send it straight to Agency for me when it's all done.
Got new rad, slightly bigger this time, so needs a little work to get it to fit, so things are on tge move, albeit slowly.

If all else fails, I might race an Mr2 at Donny, now that will be fun/funny.

But atm my back is out of action, so might not even make at all.
Time will tell.

Sorry to hear about you back tony. Rest up and get well soon.

As it happens I was in A&E a little while ago with a bad back so you have my sympathies.

Sorry to hear about your back Tony, my GF has been on Tramadol all week with her bad back so can sympathise. Sounds like the car is progressing again mate, hope to see you at Donny. The MR2 battle field will be fun mo doubt if you decide to go down that route :)

Still over the place, my back is more of a concern atm. Just pulled my entry from Donington, as I have been told by my specialist that, even if I could get in a car, it would just take one little knock and that would be it for the year (or more).

So I'm not risking it. It's supposed to be a bit of fun, missing one meeting won't hurt.

Just caught up with all of this Tony, sorry to hear about the back. As a long term sufferer I know how s**t/tedious it can be trying to live around it.

Hopefully the rebuild isnt too much of a ball ache despite it being something nobody wants at any point of a season!
