Buying a Clio Cup 172



  Clio 172 Cup (stage 1)
hello everyone, im new here and am getting my 172cup this week, is there anything i need to look out for like a usual weakness in them or a part that goes all the time, please help as i had a drive in it and fell in love with it right away but i would like to know if there is any major problems with them,,,,thanks

hello and welcome to c.s. i have a cup 2 brilliant fun but watch out now the weather is turnin bad can get a bit slippy at times.i have had no major probs with mine as of yet. have heard by a few peeps to look out 4 dodgy engine mounts and stupid stuff like that. oh and they do like tyres. had mine since last june and put a set on the bk and 2 on the front. hope u enjoy the cup and take it steady.

lol, agreed! No problems whatsoever with my cup since new ... and it goes like stink!:evil:

LOL so its not just me then?

Main things you wanna look for:

  • Exhaust - OE backbox rarely last past 40k (mine went on 36k). Listen for the a buzzy rattle at 4k rpm too - caused by loose heat shield or exhaust baffles going I think (had that before too!)
  • Engine mounts - prone to failure. Think you can tell by listening for a knocking noise as accelerate in 1st
  • Knocking/grinding noise on full lock - something to do with a nut catching on the suspension I think. Don't think it does any harm just sounds nasty. Renault can fix that IIRC
  • Steering wheel - tend to fall apart in hot weather for some reason. Thumb grips usually go first.
  • Bonnet dents easy if it is pushed shut rather than dropped (fairly minor that one)
Not trying to put you off! Absolutely love mine :)
