Buying an EU import 172

  Golf R32 & 172 CUP

Hi, hoping you could give me some help.

Im going to buy a Mk2 172 (not cup) as i want all the luxuries due to me drining everyday.

Ive currently been offered two EU imports both originally from motorpoint, what i want to know is exactly the diffrences and also if it affects the insurance in ANY way? or the warranty?

The uk cars tend to fetch more money there must be a valid reason as to the benfits and the reason why> more power - surely not?

hoping im making the right decision with the 172!!

Pete

There is no difference mate Ive had no problems with mine the cars are identicle and renault SHOULD give you the same warranty as UK cars.

The only reason UK cars are slightly higher priced is because they cost more in the first place.

The only thing you dont get is the alarm which is fitted to uk cars by the dealer but with an import you would have to pay to have an alarm fitted.

I had a 172 from Motorpoint.

The differences between the import and a UK car are:

No window etching, so its not on the security register
No alarm - Motorpoint can fit you one
No locking wheel nuts
Warranty you still get 3 years but will need to claim this from Renault. http://www.leemather.plus.com/stuff/rw.jpgLink

Insurance is no different as the car is UK spec so would cost no more to repair in the event of an accident.

I think that just about covers it, but its early and I need more coffee!

but surely if the alarm is not fitted to an eu the insurance company will have an issue with it?

Dont think so as it still has the immobiliser.

It makes bugger all difference. In fact most security add ons dont seem to effect insurance unless you are talking trackers and the like.

I had Motorpoint fit a Sigma alarm which works with the Renault Immobiliser and key fob to my 172. It had more features than the one I have on the 182!

I got mine from a proper Renault dealer, Barkers in Preston. 10995, NOT pre-regged, Im the only name in the logbook. AFAIK the car came from France with locking wheelnuts, Barkers etched it free of charge, I had to pay 250 for a Cat1 alarm.

Thats odd. If they are a Renault dealer and selling imports that didnt come via the Renault Import centre (which is where the alarm is fitted) thats a bit wierd.

Because mine came from a car supermarket I was the second name on the logbook.

They all come from the same factory, its just who brings them over that differs.

Dunno mate, they had 10 of them initially, they went within a week. I wonder if it was Renault themselves trying to clear the decks of 172s to make way for 182s. Its all kosher though, certificate of conformity details match the car etc, etc.

There is no probs with insurance, on my insurance (did it online) it got to the point where i put the number plate in and it then recognised it as a non reanault imported car and juat asked me what alarm it had on it, or at least i think it did may just have been a standard thing! Mine is a import as you have prob guessed reanult gave me a 3 yr warrenty without me saying a thing it has been in a few times for work and they have never said a thing.
