Cambelt 1.4 RT

Hi guys,

My sister and her boyfriend have just bought a Clio 1.4 RT (1995 M reg i think).

I've looked at the cambelt and it looks a little worn especially on the edges. The car has done around 38k miles.

At what mileage should the cambelt and auxillary belt be replaced? 72k?

Does the same apply to a 172 that you have to unbolt the engine from the mounts and lift the one side of the engine up to change it?

Also there seems to be a shed load of oil over the gearbox. Any ideas?

Car runs perfectly though. Bit of a whine which I pressume is coming from the aux belt.

Chris

5 years or 72k is the 16v/Williams - so I guess it's the same.

Can you see where the oil is coming from? Engine oil or Gearbox oil?

hi chris , yes it is the same 5 years /72k whichever is is first. and yes jack up engine and remove mount. also the oil leak will probably be the rocker cover gasket , common fault you may find the bolts are loose , but you will need a new gasket , only about £7 and easy to do .
also the whine might be the timing belt tensioner, these can start whining when they are starting to sieze

So the car is definately due a cambelt now as it's 11 years old lol and I don't know if the previous owners have done it.

Well if the cambelt is replaced then the timing belt will be too and the tensioners so that should sort that problem out.

I'll check the rocker cover. Is it just bolted on? whip it off, new gasket on and rebolt?

I just saw a s**t load of oil over the top of the gearbox not sure whether it's a spillage from previous owners or what.

I'll probably steam clean it off and check again after it's been run a bit.

the belts you can see are powersteering and alternator belts , you cant see the timing belt until the covers are removed.

My RT is waiting for a replacement engine after bending the valves following a problem with the belts (pin holding crank pulley sheared and alternator pulley bolt worked loose, when refitted it turned the cams without turning the rest of the engine,so on restarting it the valves bent).

I had to do the rocker gasket on mine too, cost me £3 for the gasket! Took no time at all, just make sure you get the faces of the cover clean before fitting the new one.

Right i'm ordering the following for my sister

Oil filter
Air Filter
4 Plugs - will bosch super plus FR7 DC+ be ok? They have got like 1 prong over the top

Brake pads (front)
Cam belt - what other belts do I need considering nothings been changed on it for 11 years?

Rocker Cover Gasket

Rear brakes - what do I need? are they pads or shoes?

Anything else I need?

If your doing the cambelt replace the tensioner and water pump while its off just to know youve done them. If one of them goes another new cambelt needed!

I'm buying a cambelt kit with the tensioners and auxillary belt.

Not that i'm aware theres no more oil. The oil is just on the gearbox itself only.

I'd buy NGK sparks imo. BCP5ES. :) You could always get some Magnecor HT Leads if you reeeeallly wanted to as well. :D

So brakes shoes?

The spark plugs I listed I have spare already so want to use those really.

I'm not bothered about the best parts for it. Just so it works.

Fair enough, if you have them may as well use them. Just make sure the gap is 0.8mm :)

(Oh, but the NGK were only £9 from ebay! Bargain!)

Anywho, a very good site to get spares from is GSF. Here is the link,

They do loads of replacements OEM parts along with some aftermarket stuff for the Clio. :) For example, Rear Brake Shoe (not sure if yours are Bendix or Lucas/Girling) are £14.50!
