cambelt problems (local garages)

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
My 172 cup has now covered 63k miles and without service history, I will need the belts doing now that i've decided i'm going to keep it.

Any specialists in Manchester/South Manchester/North Cheshire area who can do this with prices? Unsure of what exactly i'll need doing... I don't know what it's had done in the past so whatever it needs doing for guaranteed piece of mind?

Like I said it's the cup 172 so no air con, so hopefully a slight saving in prices.

Cheers,

Luke

Just been reading through the maintenance programme (official) from Renault and it doesn't say anything about belt changes at 36k? Mine has only done 63k so hasn't reached the 72k mark yet...

first one is s**t, its made of cheese
second one is nearly correct, missing a few bits
Hi everyone with regards to locking off the rear of the cams, to get the dephaser off couldnt you get away with using an impact and taking it off? and when installing the new one place it with mark in 12 oclock position and buzz it back on then torque it to spec when the new belt is on?

  megane
if you want your timing to be out then yes

also how are you going to get a gun on the exhaust nut?

I was just on about the dephaser pulley swap, if you lock the back of the cams, plus the tool to lock the actual pulleys then use an impact to undo the nut and when you come to re-installing it you can lightly zip it on then torque it to spec. What you guys think?

Does anyone know what the torque spec for the dephaser pulley bolt?

Cheers

because you HAVE to undo the exhaust nut also to do the timing PROPERLY, without the pulley tool = forget doing the job

Had my 172 cup for about a week now, 2003 and 85k miles. There is a stamp in the log book for the cam belt change which was done at 52k miles in 2008. I tried to follow up on the garage but there website is down and the phone doesn't ring, which makes me think it no longer exists. As my mechanical knowledge is extremely limited, I'm pretty paranoid about the belts going as the only proof is a stamp in the service book! As it is due next year anyway I thought I might as well get it done now so I can relax a bit.

Are there any recommended garages in the Wiltshire area?

I don't want to risk going to a local garage who don't have the correct tools so would happily pay for petrol to go further a field so I know the job has been done properly. As my 172 cup doesn't have aircon, am I looking at around £300 all in?

Cheers

Thanks for the offer, seems like a competitive price, but Nottingham is quite a trek from here. I will see what other options I have first

It's worth travelling for, I'd strongly recommend using the specialists on the forum. I drove from Yorkshire to Birmingham for my 182 belt kits replacing. I can vouch for mick too, he has worked on my 182 and I'd recommend him to anyone with a Renault.

Don't get me wrong, Im definitely travelling to a specalist. There are a couple on here that are a closer to me as well as being a bit more competitive price wise, thats all.

My Clio RS 197 is due a belt change (5 years old now) asap.

Could someone please recommend a decent garage in the Gloucestershire area.

A speedy response would be much appreciated if anyone does know of anywhere as I'd like to get it done soon.

The only place i've found is http://mandnmotorservices.co.uk as they say they're a renault specialist, but doesn't mention them being a RS specialist.

I think someone mentioned Barry Plant sons in Bicester (which isn't a million miles away)?

Also what are peoples opinions on letting a Renualt dealership handle it? Will they generally do it correctly or are they as likely to c**k it up as a none specialist garage?

Thanks

If you're in Gloucestershire, take it to Fred Hopkins at BTM Performance. It's not too far for you, get it done right, first time, at a sensible price.
A Renault dealership should be fine but will probably charge a fair bit more and it's pot luck as to how they treat your car.

I looked at BTM but it's an hour and a half away, which is a bit far considering I'd only be able to drop it off before work or at a weekend.

Really could do with something a bit closer to home

Fred will do it any time of day or night for you, no joke.

He will work to suit you just so you take it somewhere to get it done properly.

Drop it in first thing in the morning on a Saturday, Fred will drop you at the local train station, train into Brum, Bullring, restaurants, cinemas, spend a few hours there and go back and collect the car and enjoy the drive home.
To be honest, having seen a lot of garages (franchise and independent, prestige and mainstream, I also work in the car industry) I have never met anyone I'd trust more.
I take all our cars (inc. non-Renault) to him.
Thing with franchised dealers is you're an invoice, a number, and they need your car in and out and any tech from the dealership could work on your car.
With independents, their reputation relies on the work they do.

Did you follow me when Fred did my dephaser & belts as that story sounds very familiar!

Dropped my car off at 10am, he then took me and a friend to the train station, advised us to just pay 20p for a travel permit and to pay the remaining cost at B'ham New Street. We had a wander around the Bullring, watched Loopers at the Odeon, got the train back and arrived back at BTM just in time to witness Fred time my engine up (whilst doing so he was perfectly happy for me to watch and he explained everything he was doing)

Cheers

Big shout out to Ness Motors in Inverness

Bit of advice please guys on a 1.4 16v job I've got to quote. Would like to do the full works at 80k and an 04 plate that's never been done. Has aircon and the like. Where can I get DECENT tools buy or rent (since I've got another to do) and any complications along the way?

I've done loads of cambelts just like to know what I'm getting into before hand. I fully understand the use of proper tools, they not ones you can fabricate? Floating pulleys aren't new to me at all I did a 16v Punto last week with them but those tools are easy fabricatable!

Cheers! Does about 360-400 quid sound about right with cambelt, aux kit and waterpump and is it just the aux tensioner that needs doing on that side of things?

Just after reading up don't really want to listen to the usual garage manuals.

The correct, NECESSARY tools to do the job

What is the tool in the first picture used for if the tool in the second locks the cams into place anyway? Just wondering :)

  172
It locks the pulleys in place, without this you'll bend the tool in the lower photograph when undoing or doing up the camshaft pulley bolts - putting the timing out.

  Clio Campus Sport
Wondering if anyone can help my 07 1.2 campus sport has just reached 72000 miles which is when the service book recommends I get the belt changed. But I wont be able to get it done for at least another week and i could probably do another 150 miles in that time, will I be okay until then and are there any cases of clios which have went on way past the 72000 without a change?

So they didn't change any of the camshaft fixings, oil seals or the crank pulley bolt then?
