cambelt problems (local garages)

my 1.2 8v, does that need specialist hands or could a local monkey garage do it ? - its due for a cambelt change .. so anyone in the S derbyshire area who wants an 'easy' job in the next month or so ?

Depends how handy you are with a spanner - they're not complicated but unless you have a rough idea i wouldn't want to risk it.

Clutch should be straight forward

Getting the local Garage to do mine after a long and hard think about it! they assure me they have the proper tools - they had to borrow them from another Garage!!

I am getting my Timing belt changed along with the Dephaser Pulley and the Oil Pump and also the Chain because it's way too slack he tells me.

I hope that should sort out the problems i've been having which i posted in another thread on here... driving me nuts!!

Is there anything i should make them aware of when doing it?? i understand as i've read countless threads on this that it should be done by a specialist but i'll take a chance safe in the knowledge that i will take it a specialist if they balls it up!

Also, should i be looking to change the Aux belt and waterpump at the same time? ( i have a leak coming from somewhere - it empties my washer bottle, i can see it dripping through my passenger wheel arch cover)

lol your water pump has nothing to do with your washer bottle, you will have a crack in your windscreen washer bottle.

yeah i helped my friend put an engine ina 106 gti, n we just but the clutch on that, stuck on the gear box n dropped it in.. was thinging, how easy are the gear box's to come off this ?

You missed the locking pins on the crankshaft, those are a must aswell.
Here in south america the 1.4/1.6 16v have the tendency to break the timing belt even before the reccomended 60k kms interval...I've seen cars with broken belts (and valves) at 50k kms :s
I did mine at 50k kms just to be sure, the water pump was already making noises....
This is definitely the weak point on our cars.

Im just looking at the pictures of the locking tools but I cant understand how it differs from the normal holding grippers that hold the camshafts together in place.

What is the purpose of the rear of the camshafts holders too?, even if everything was marked up and aligned correctly even if it moved would it not be possible to re align against the marks?

I have done numerous belts on twin cam and single cam engines but I dont understand the complexity of this one?

Also I.read somewhere online the bumper needs to come off ! ???

My 182 is starting to sound like a diesel! It's done 69k miles and not had anything done with regards to timing belts etc. Can anyone recommend a garage in the West Yorkshire region (Leeds or Wakefield ideally) that could do the whole timing belt, aux kit, depahser etc?

Big thank you to Mick from Diamond Motors (MicKPM) who came up from Nottingham to do the job and sorted everything out! New timing belt, aux kit, dephaser and I even splashed out on a new water pump too! Top guy, top job and very reasonable price. Highly recommended.

bought the cam belt, aux belt, tensioners and waterpump for around £140 ish 6 month ago. renault specialist garage carried out the work for £200. no problems.

A day in the local French Car garage, £540 later and I have a new cambelt kit & water pump, I initially asked them to the aux too as I don't have much history for the car but they said it looks new so let it be!

I feel much happier driving it now, cambelt was overdue so I was always worried it was gonna snap! >_<

Most cars have some kind of key way which means the cam pulley can only go on in 1 exact position, so its easier to mark up and align. F4R's dont have any key ways so although you could mark them up "roughly", it'll be very hard to get the timing 100% accurate, especially when tightening all the bolts.

The pulleys work on friction alone, so in practice you can set the belt tension completely, and rotate all the pulleys without any of the engine internals moving whatsoever, before torquing everything up. Hope that makes sense

Clearly this subject is very strongly followed by all of us that have had or will soon be having cambelt and accessory belt changes in the near future.
I had my belts done at 36,000 (5 years) and now just runnin into 57,000. I have had my 182 from new and notice every little change in knock,squeek,rattle.
I am therefore certain that since having my belts done by a friend at his garage that the car is alot noisier on tickover. He assures me the car is running sweet as and that it is just normal (nothing to worry about). Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

My Scenic seemed loud when I first got it to. After I changed the belt it was a lot quieter and it seemed to have a bit more mid-range to.

I've currently got Judes Clio in for some repairs to the cylinder head after the previous owner killed the thread on plug No.3 which needs fixing as well as a new timing belt/dephaser. You can tell the previous owner had the belts changed but by someone that didn't know what they were on with. The camshaft oil seals were both pressed as far back as they could go so the inlet camshaft seal was leaking oil everywhere. The camshaft end caps had holes in them which had been siliconed over to stop them leaking. What worried me even more was that the sprockets had numerous paint marks on them which were obviously an attempt at making sure things didn't move. Finally, the tensioner was pulled all the way round to close on 3 O'Clock - What's wrong with all this you might ask? Well, all of it and this is why it pays to take your car to be seen by an actual specialist and not some garage that will have a go.

I have read numerous threads about this so have contacted Pure Motorsport in Padstow who I am waiting to hear from but just wondered if anyone can recommend someone else for a reasonable price?? Booked my clio in yesterday to have the cambelt changed by a friend. He told me that a workshop just round the corner, working on a 172, had tried to fit a cambelt 3 times ! They changed the belt, got it wrong , wrecked the valves. Then did the same thing again after taking advice from my mate on how to double check everything Now they are on the third attempt ! Must have a very tolerant customer !!!

Hi there, great thread by the way, exactly what i logged on for!

I need your help. I've a clio 197. 3.5 years old on 39,500 miles. I got thinking about changing my cam belt etc as i'd heard that when they go its big trouble.

What mileage do you reccomend that you get your Cambelt/ timing belt changed? Do i have a while yet or is it just around the corner?

My mate who runs a garage told a famous story of his that a year ago a guy who owned a 197 asked him how much he'd charge him to change the cambelt etc and my mate not having done one on a clio before said oh £150, apparantley the guy couldn't get his clio to him quick enough.... my mate realised after taking him 3.5 days to complete the job why he was so eager to drop the car off. apparantely renault had quoted him £650 plus VAT lol.

Anyway if i was to getthe cambelt changed do you recommend that i get he whole lot done?

dephasers on 197's seem pretty reliable, so don't worry about that

water pump is a must on a 197

cambelt is the timing belt

from a specialist you'll be under £500 for a 197

Hi guys i just had my cambelts changed on friday along with VVT at a local garage for £500 my car is a 2002 plate 172 , whilst driving it today the drive stopped all together, i pulled over and it will go into gear and seems to select them ok but when the clutch is let out it goes nowhere , just wondering if anyone knows much about this problem im guessing its the clutch plates but im curious as to whether it would be linked to the cambelt change ?

If you read the manual its a joke, like removing the exhaust system etc. Another tech had a 250 the other day for rocker box reseal and it told you to take the turbo off, got around that easily, book time was like 11.5 hours lol.

Hi I have recently bought a 1.4 16v clio MK2 ph1 and I can't find any record of a cambelt change, that's not to say it hasn't been done and it's not due yet mileage wise, but it is way over it's 5 year limit so I'm going to get it changed.

Renault quoted £667 for cam belt and water pump and Hi Q a local garage quoted £421. I did outline that it needed special tools but I'm not sure whether the guy actually checked or just gave me an estimate anyway.


What I want to know is if anyone can recommend a garage in the Oxfordshire area for me
