Ive had slower cars than my Clio turbo. But only as second cars to try and keep the miles off the Clio or to fill in for when its been off the road having work done. In the last couple of years, whilst all the time owning my Clio, Ive had a Nissan 200SX (1.8 turbo ~190bhp), Fiat Tipo (1.4 ~60bhp?), 1966 Beetle (1300 ~30bhp?) and I just bought an 84 VW Scirocco (1800 ~90bhp)
So lets see; the 200SX...quite fast, bloody heavy and nowhere near as quick as the Clio, but a much better cruiser. Tipo...the least fun you can have in a car, a chore to drive, 0-60 seemed to be in minutes rather than seconds, but reliable. Beetle...the slowest of all but the most fun, a lovely car to drive, as long as it wasnt raining, cold or windy LOL, bonus was you could get the back end out on damp roundabouts. Scirocco, 0-60 in under 10, nice and solid, you wouldnt call it quick though but you can chuck it around.
So I guess the answer is yes, its not all about outright speed. The Beetle was the slowest thing on the road, but it was great to drive. The Scirocco would only be considered a warm hatch nowadays but its satisfying to pilot. The Nissan was fairly quick compared to most cars but it wasnt that enjoyable to drive. Great in a straight line and in oversteer but dull in between. The Fiat was crap AND slow LOL
