Change to new 197??

  ST
Been thinking about this for a few days since my dad mentioned going to motorpoint and chopping in his meg dci 130 for a new dci sport thingy...

If they were going to give us a good deal on my 182 and his meg i might go for it...

Thoughts please??

Cheers, Alan.

tread carefully with Motorpoint mate, customer services are sh*te and I had no end of trouble with them when purchasing my 172. As said, if I was going for a 197 i think it would only be the R27 version, in either Black or Nimbus. But also, agree they are a lot of money considering the prices the Meganes can be had for (hence why I have one).

I bought my 197 from motorpoint and here are my thoughts. Firstly, I wouldn't pay anywhere near the dealer price for the 197 as it's really not worth it IMO - nor is the R27 for that matter but you could argue about this all day long. For me, while quality has taken a great leap upwards, I would be extremely unhappy to pay anything over £15k for the 197 as the interior isn't worth more than this and while it's quick, it's not a complete flying machine.

Given that the 197s motorpoint have are imports, your colour choice and spec is likely to be limited. At the Glasgow branch they had the albi blue and nimbus although I believe I could have had it in red as they had this colour in stock. Personally, I fell in love with the nimbus and given that I could see the car on the forecourt there and then, I went for it.

While you do make a great saving on list from Motorpoint, your car won't come with an alarm. I implied that I wasn't happy to go ahead with the deal if I didn't get the alarm fitted for free, which they did. I was also assured a full tank of petrol which I didn't get when I collected the car. However, in the end I was glad because you can ONLY use super unleaded in the 197 or you risk damaging the engine and having to put up with cold start problems. Before I knew about the full extent of the problems I was using 95 RON but having had the engine light come on immediately after filling up with my 10th or so tank, I now use super every time. You do notice increased fuel economy but even so, this is a major drawback of the car. I get about 25mpg with varied driving and even withh very restrained driving I find it difficult to get beyond 30mpg. A full tank costs me about £46.00and I fill up 4 or 5 times a month

You also won't get the digital climate at Motorpoint but I wouldn't pay the extra for it anyway - you still get air con - which I also never use lol. Seats are great, door handles are too far forward. Engine noise is good and can be further improved with an aftermarket system - I have my eye on the Miltek system retailing at around £500 after fitting.

The gearing set up is all wrong - I need a 7th gear on the motorway and there's isn't enough oomph low down below 5k rpm - get it at the sweet spot and it's rapid. I like to drive my cars hard so I'm in my element although I would alter the ratios if I could.

You also won't get locking nuts so you'll need to get them from a dealer - about £25 I think I paid. You also don't get a spare wheel with ANY 197 but tyre foam which I've been told is useless - I'm toying with getting some sort of spacesaver but don't know where to get one from.

Anyways, go to motorpoint and make sure you get a good deal.

Good luck,

Martin

I think the 197 looks fecking wicked. Love the looks inside and out but it just doesn't seem as good value as the 182. The discounted prices available are good but a lot of the toys are missing that were standard on my car.

Don't agree you've not saved 5k you've just paid what the car was worth, people who pay full price for a renault are silly.

Thanks for insight Martin.

I knew about not getting an alarm on most of the cars bought at motorpoint from when i was looking at 182's a couple of years ago.

My 182 is a late 2005 55 plate, with 18 months or warranty left, its on 14,800 miles, black gold with both cup pack, has all the toys i want, so i guess it'd be stepping down in spec for a new car...the only options i think i'd want is xenons and climate control...hmm

Having mixed thoughts now..

I bought my 182 pre reg'd with 6 miles on the clock in december 2005, list price was something like £15k, i got it for £11,988...

Not sure what to do now..

Absolutely - you want to feel that you're moving up and not down. Having never owned a 182 I can't say too much but on general looks and overall quality, I'd say that the 197 is a step up. Debatable to many I know. Regarding the options, then if your hearts set on xenons and the like then I'd be inclined to try and get a damn good deal froma dealer although if you do go brand new I think you'll struggle to get anywhere near Motorpoint's price even with a good discount. Some ppl have probably done it though.

Good luck.

197 appears to be a good car, just IMO don't think it's worth the money, comes with basically same spec as 182 cup for 2k more.

Nothing wrong with motorpoint imo . Smooth sale where i was concerned . The only thing is Alan i'd be surprised if you get a good deal on your 182 and yours dads meg . Privates always the best way to sell as your probably aware of already , its just a bit of a ball ache waiting for someome to come and view .

I'd stick with the 182 , much better looking car imo .

aye I'm kinda in that situation, I wouldn't have bought the 182 3 years ago had I been working locally - only now getting into a position to buy a house (don't wanna sell mine).

I agree with Rory...sell the 182, get a 1.2 and get a hoose!

Or keep the 182 for a wee bit longer and get a FRS

  tiTTy & SV650
^ I never said sell it, wait 2 years till the Lawyer mrs is working then buy a hoose and enjoy the 182 in the meantime.

I'll go drive one and see how i feel then...but what rory is saying is very wise..

1.2 Kenny, been there done that...was a good car but i'd prob have problems driving a smaller engined car after the 182...as in i'd go to overtake, not enough power, oh sh1t theres a 40 tonne lorry comin lol...

  M2 Competition
All these people that keep saying get an r26 instead of r27... completely different car! Bigger, uglier, and just not the same. Id have an r27 in yellow.

The 197's are mint cars alan, go for it mate.

if u wanna a test drive ur welcome to try mine alan,

i think u should wait to see wat the cup is gonna be like in nov, i peronally think the 197 is very good car but not perfect as i have a big list of faults on mine , the low down power is abismal , its honestly like turbo lag infact the meg wasn,t even as bad but once it hits 5k its really shifts, RS tunning will sort this out for me soon lol wouldn,t say its a step down from a 182 tho , apart from the half leather it is better built better materials but to get top spec u got to pay 17k+ and thats silly money

I agree the 197 standard spec isn't exactly great but think back to when the phase I 225 came out what was the equipment and price like?

I was chatting to the folks at Renault in Burton the other day (I'm getting tempted to swap the LCR) - and they can do a 197 for around £14.5K till the end of the month... At that price, I'd go to renault rather than get an import and have to add an alarm etc... (and I bought the 182 from motorpoint, with no complaints there...)
