clio 172 cup or clio 182?? which to buy?

Car  BMW 535D
im currently looking at buying a 182 but im struggling to find a decent one for around my £8500 budget, but there are loads of clio 172 cups i could afford!

im just wondering if the 182 is worth the extra money!

p.s. anyone got a black 182 with cup pack they wana sell me??

chris :P

I think the Clio Cup is easily the better looking car, you just can't beat that mondial blue and turini combination!

I've never read a comparison between the two so i'm not sure if the 182 is a 'step up' or not. I have driven a standard 172 and 172 Cup back to back at Brands and the Cup was better, if a little twitchy in wet conditions.

You can get a 182 in arctic which is very similar to mondial blue on the cup. differences are mainly spec. Performance is basically identical, you get abs and esp/traction on a 182 which you dont have on the cup plus toys like full climate, xenons, auto wipers/lights and half leather/alcantara. Depends what you prefer really.

yeh i like the look of the 182's esp with the anthracite wheels, it looks like im going to have to play the waiting game for a decent one to come up within my price range! Thats why ive been considering the cups, because there are loads about, for less ££ and i wouldnt have to travel as far!

I have a Cup172 that l'm looking to sell.

I guess it depends what you want if you want air con and leather then go for the 182 if it doesnt bother you then go for the 172 cup and save a few £'s

Disagree with the cup looking better than the 182, i think the twin exhaust makes the car look more sportier IMO also i cant tell the difference between mondial blue and arctic blue

I've never driven a 172 but the Cup is nice however I'd have a 182 over one any day - nicer interior, twin exhausts, xenons, recaros, faster by 10hp!!!! :p ;) :clown:

yeh im liking the sound of the climate control and the leather!! had a deal agreed with a bloke nr london for a 54 plater in black with both cup packs under 20k for £8500 but he's nt answered his fone all weekend! :(

I bought a 172 Cup for a few reasons:

1. Couldn't justify the extra money for a car that isn't really any better
2. 182 is heavier
3. Cup packs do not a Cup make
4. I don't need useless stuff like half leather, cruise control, auto lights and wipers (i mean, really?) - it all weighs extra.
5. 'Comfort' means nothing to me in a performance car.

I wanted a drivers car with no irrelevant crap on it, and the fact that its the cheapest as well means its a winning combination.

My friend gets Track and Race Car which is a fine mag. Not Max Power at all; it is more interested in fine handling cars and the whole enthusiasm behind motorsport and cars that have been modified to better do their job (no 'bling'). The review in there of the 182 Trophy started with a light history of the 172/182 and the guy said he preferred the 172 Cup as it was the most raw and animal of all of them. It happens a lot; car manufacturer makes a mental car then spends the next few years making slightly softer, more comfortable versions with extras that people like but performance cars don't need. The original ethos is lost. Think 106 Rallye, Mk1 Golf GTi.

Later in the same mag there was a tour of the Renaultsport factory and the first page of that turned into a love-in for the 172 Cup as well. They rate it very highly indeed.

Lets be honest; there is going to be f**k-all between most of these models so why spend the extra? The 172 is a hell of a car for the money.

both my friend and I bought in the last three weeks 172 Cups with Climate Control - it was an option on the last of the 2003s. Ours are both November.

Leather? Over-rated. My last car had leather and i don't miss it. We buy these cars to drive, not fawn over the equipment levels. I do, anyway.

^^ Yeh depends what your after mate - for the bare raw experience get a 172 Cup however like your gadgets and want to pick up more birds in a hair dressers car then get a 182! LOL :p

I'd go for the 182...if your not tracking it often it'll be more than enough to keep you entertained on the roads plus it'll have all the toys:D

im edging towards the 182 a bit more than the cup, its like i said though, there arent that many 182's for sale within my budget at the mo.

Go for the cup, you'll get a corker for £7.5k, spend the extra on a few subtle engine mods

I've got a cup and my mates got a 182 and I much prefer mine. I might be sweating like John Leslie in the summer cos I haven't got Climate but so what, I want to drive it not pose in it !

cups came with climate control?? back on autotrader i go!

The Cups with Climate Control are actually silver and not blue. Very rare cars. Only a handful were made. It may take some time to find a decent one!

Tyson.

i got a cup 172 with climate(sliver, 90 were made), its the dogs, drove the 182 and loved it,then saw my cup and drove that, loved it even more, felt more rugged and raw. just wat i was looking for i a hot hatch.
like others have said, if u want comfort, toys and gadgets then go for a 182(liquid yellow colour is lush!)
if u want a raw hot hatch that is just the bare essencials then go for the cup 172.
there both great cars its just all down to user preferance!

for me tho its more of a debate of which one would depreciate the quickest. if ure planning to sell the car at some stage be aware that for roughly the same price more people would prefer the 182s.. when coming to buyin a second hand car, most people want more for their money coupled by the fact that the cup is more expensive to insure (ive come across) and itll appeal to the minority who actually track their cars... to benift from the cup.

an idea to think about, but totally MO tho

Not true, i am afraid. As per my last post, Climate Control was a £600 option on the last of the 172 Cups. Both mine and my friends are November 2003 and have Climate. Both are the Mondial Blue, the only colour the Cup came in (apart from the limited edition silver 'climate edition' you are talking about).

im also looking for a 172 soon, but what is the difference within the 3? also what is the best year to get a 172 on,i know some comewith this on that year and some dont get that on that year.i need lots of advice i think, lol
im more for a 172 maybe put some cup alloys on. i like the gadgets and comfort rather than performance.

Get a Cup. Above all else, from what I've read on here, they are the fastest cars on the planet.

They can beat Boxter S's and do 0-60 in 5.5. Amazing.

The main differences between the Renaultsport Clios are:

172- has loads of toys like air con, leather xenons etc 157bhp per tonne

172 cup - no toys, (no abs) but lighter 90kg, better suspension and handling 171bhp/per tonne so slighly better performance.

182 with cup packs- 10bhp more but heavier than the cup, 167bhp/per tonne, has all the toys like the 172 and also has the twin exhaust, similar handling to the 172 cup

182 cup - very similar to the 182 with cup packs but loses some equipment, like leather seats, xenons but still has air con, this results in a 20kg reduction in weight. 169bhp/per tonne

182 trophy - very similar to the 182 cup but has superior suspension set up which improves handling, limited edition only available in red also has recaros as standard, 169bhp per tonne

To sum up if you want a more comfortable car get the 172 or 182

If you are looking for more of a drivers car get a trophy or a cup

For a happy medium get the 182 with both cup packs

lol..............we cant:quiet:

i brought my cup cos it was a near to a mk1 golf gti as i could get without buying a mk1.
Imo the cup is the best looking clio apart from th v6 255.
As far as the seats go.... youll wanna rip them useless things out no matter weather you go for a cup or 182.

lol @ limited edition silver 'climate edition'

Buy a 182, it won't depreciate as badly.

However if you want a better car, buy a Cup.

Cups are great looking raw cars for driving.
182's are great looking cars for driving with a little comfort.
You'll love the 182 for the lights and the climate, but if you want an all out track thing then get a cup
Personally i would have the 182.You would need to spend nearly 30k on a bmw to get the same spec as the 182.

ian

go for the 182, looks better, more choice in colour, twin exhaust, nicer wheels, toys, etc.. thats what i did last week, the 172 looks too much like a normal clio with different wheels imo.. racing stripes etc make the 182 stand out

182's are for pussys who cant handle the pace and need comforts like AC to keep cool when they get scared of going fast.
