i received my renewal quote for my insurance today, and it says that the price has increased as the Clio 172 cup has been placed in a different insurance group?? Is this true, does anyone know if it has changed groups?

If they have i want to know if its legal! It would be shocking to put the insurance group up off other peoples writeoffs ffs!!

i know! Last time i looked the 172 cup was insurance group 17. The 182 is insurance group 16D - is it the higher the group, the higher the insurance cost?

maybe so, have you tired other insurance companies? maybe see if they have the same info on their databases?

I work for an insurer and they cannot just up the group on a vehicle. This is set when the vehicle is produced as stated in manufacturers booklet.

Sure "risk" (being your premium) can fluctuate and this is effected by things such as the amount crashed and the amount stolen...but very little amounts and has to be collated of a long period of time.

Sounds like they are trying to pull a fast one...which insurer out of interest?

I was under the impression that Greenlight didnt insure the 172 Cup, as I have tried on occasion. The bloke on the phone said its lack of abs and the number of writeoff claims they have had. Looks like it could just be Greenlight who are upping the insurance group!

Who's that with??

Norwich Union tried it with me on my old 1.6 16v, I then did a quote as a new customer, saved myself £300 on the renewal price. dont renew just get a new quote with the same firm you will be suprised!! are eligable for the discount as a new customer!

well i rang today, they said that due to lots of claims and the fact that the car doesnt have ABS they have reviewed it and its more of a risk etc etc so basically its going to cost more. he also said that they do not insure new customers who have the 172 cup. I got a quote with churchill - £917 and thats with my 3 points, but it doesnt include my mods - OMP strut brace, ITG maxogen air filter, 17" speedline turini's and magnex cat-back exhaust system - have to ring to get a quote for that.

Its all a load of shite - whats stopping all insurers doing the same every year. Its just a con. I aint crahsed my car so why the hell should i pay more just cos other people have!!!!

Insurers can do exactly as they please with groups of vehciles. There is guideline group published by the Association of British Insurers in which I seem to remeber the Cup is 16 - this is the one generally published in mags and the manufactures bumf.

Insurers are not required to follow these groups, and many don't ,and some even use 1-40 groups. If an insurers wants to put the Cup in group 20 or group 2 it's up to them.

Obviously if an Insurers statistics show that lots of Cup's are being stacked, they are going to put our premiums up becuase, according to their figures we are more likley to claim and cost them money - that's how Insurance works!!

Completely correct....

We no longer insure the 172 Cup models for new customers due to our bad claims experience. The underwriters are increasing renewal rates for any existing customers on 172 Cup's to reflect the high number of claims received.

We didn't mean the vehicle ABI insurance group has changed. We have just re-groupped our premium bandings on the 172 Cup into a higher bracket based on claims experience.

Best Regards

imo it seems like its only greenlight cashing in on this trend of 172 cups being crashed, ive done several quotes with other insurance companies(phone and online) and every 1 would insure me under the 1k mark, greenlight wouldnt. change insurance companies jp

Same, the only company that said a complete no were greenlight, I found no others that said no.

No big deal, and the end of the day, they missed out on a lot of money from me.

exactly, if a company doestn want my business and is going to be picky about what car i drive and they are going to bump up your premium just based on the car you drive then imo not worth entertaining at all, not very accomodating is it and is quite discrimitive!!!
