Only reason i noticed was cos my dad heard it when i was coming home, car drives fine, sounds like its coming from under the cover that forms part of the engine mount.

yea, the dephaser is what operates the vvt. bar the solenoid.
if you remove that cover make sure the engine is supported.

Its almost starting to sound like a broken follower. take off the oil cap and see if you can see anything.

De-phaser pulley, sounds like a diesel on idle then goes silent when revving/driving, if it does not do this then could be more involved.
Cambelt job again basically, de-phaser is around £150 from Renault but should be able to get a used on from the forum for sensible money.

and yes is not going to be cheap, you could always just have a non-genuine timing belt fitted as it sounds like you had a full kit fitted a while ago, GSF do the belt on its own for £20, then non-genuine accessory belt is around £10(GSF), used de-phaser pulley from Specialist breakers £50 odd?
Then its just the labour to have it fitted.

If you take the oil cap off when the car is ticking over does the noise get louder?

Are these on hydraulic lifters? It sounds exactly like a stuck lifter to me. If Im right you'll damage a cam lobe and the duff lifter by continuing to run it.

Its going to cost you a lot of money to fix the noise - even if you knew exactly what it was. Unless you are confident you know what the problem is Id be inclined to look out for a good replacement engine and do a complete swap.
Remember you wont need the starter motor, alternator, gearbox etc and you could do a cambelt change on the replacement engine before it goes into the car.
Just a thought.

It'd probably end up quicker to drop a new lump in it. Its just cost really, i'd have no doubt its repairable but its just if you can do it yourself or not.
If you can DIY and can live without the car for a few days i'd be tempted to get the engine out as it'll be far less fiddly with it out.
