Clio 172 help needed for Newbie

Hi,

I currently own a Primera (Yes, stop laughing now)

I want something more sporty, dont need the 4doors etc. Need a bit of Va Va Voom in my life.

So, Ive been looking around and the 172 looks a likely candidate.

I stumbled across your humble abode and after wiping my feet at the door, thought Id ask for your advice.

What should I be looking for in a 172?
Any known problems?
Is the difference between Phase 1 and Phase 2 172s simply cosmetic? Or is there more to it? Spec levels?
Do some colours hold there value better, Ive seen a lot of Silver ones.
Whats a fair price to pay?

Bear in mind that build quality issues are to be expected, being as my Nissan Primera is part Laguna anyway

Im hoping to part with less than £8500, is that realistically gonna get me a nice example of a 172?

A few,
Rattle in exhaust at 4k
Knocking under wheelspin (it is though to be axle tramp though)
and a few more I cant recall, nothing to serious though.

Not just cosmetic, more than 50% of the parts have been changed.

Silver is very popular (read common) but I dont think the colour is affecting the value very much.

Should get you a nice example mk1, might stretch to a nice mk2 172

i made the exact same move primera si P11 to mk2 172and tbh not much to compare except well i liked the primera seats more oh and more room and better build quality

Personally I would go for the MK1 but hey I might be a bit biased

Well I went and looked at a 51 reg 172 in Silver today.

Nice tidy car, although somethings put me off.

1.) Pushy Salesman
2.) Original Ad said "12,000 miles", car had 14025miles
3.) Original Ad said "8695" when I got there, the car was 9495

Told the wife I was considering a Clio 172, and she said "ooooh, I like the clio" so thats a start

I made the same move as well Primera SRi (modded with HSH etc etc 170 hp) to a Cup, the handling on the Primera was brillaint and mine was pretty fast as well especially 80-1?? + but the 172 will be much more fun to drive and has much more "street cred" than a "taxi" Primera.

How things have moved on since I posted here in my "1st ClioSport" thread

I bought myself a 2003 172 in Flame Red. Ive now had it for 3months and so far have done the following:-

PiperCross Viper
K-Tec Twin 3" CatBack System
Origin b2
OMP Rear Strut Brace
OMP Front Strut Brace (not fitted yet)

Ive also bought 3 clio models off of ebay, 1 is the flame red 172 and the other 2 were the Cup/S1600 presentation pack.

I love my 172
