Clio 182 loss of power , burning oil and leaking a huge amount of oil , help ,

Hi guys I've had no end of trouble with my car since day one ,, sent it in to have the defacer pulley , cam belts aux belt and timing belt doing, ,, got my car back and it was running sweet , never been faster and just the engine in General was puring like a beauty but two days after picking it up I was only doing maybe 50mph due to bad weather and next thing it started to judder and massive backfire , all warning lights came on and engine died ,, rac said the came belt slipped off so sent it back to the garage who claims it actually dropped a valve destroying piston no.1 ,, head was sent off to a specialist to be skimmed an re welded , new piston new valves, valve stems and seals but it's never been in such a bad state ,, over £2000 has been spent and it's still broken ,, pulled a spark plug out to fid it's been disintegrated ,, anyone no what could be up ,, need all the help I can get plzzzzzz , and could someone email me and engine rebuild manual to townley.nick@yahoo.co.uk

Do a leakdown test.

So far I think it's leaking from the crank casing on the cam belt side and from therockercover ,, vvt seems to not be working properly as really jerky ,

And what you mean a leak down test mate ?

Leakdown test is where you put pressurised air into the sparkplug hole and measure how much leaks and then look for where from.

Its better than guesswork!

Cheer man for and extra 300 quid I could of brought a brand spanking new engine still in the rapper off Reno ,, this what happens when you put your trust into a garage that's runs there business like a pikey lol

Yeah although you would have then had a bill on top for removing old engine and transferring all the ancillaries over to the new one and refitting it and fluid etc.
so probably a bill around 4k including VAT etc.

Just a question, you had all belts done by a garage, and 2 days later the belt slips, jumps, or generally shat its self, destroying the engine, and you're paying????

Yes you are missing that it didnt slip the belt, it dropped a valve.

If that is the case, its literally just coincidence it happened after the belt was changed.


Dropping valves is by no means unheard of on these engines either, so its not a scenario I would say is implausible, just terrible luck with the timing


God knows why they would weld up a head you can replace for 50-100 quid though!

Depends what rpm it happened at TBH, if you are going fast enough when the belt lets go it can easily bust the valve apart and then ruin everything just the same as if the valve failed in the first place.

Id really question the validity of repairing one of these engines with just a piston after a valve has done that sort of damage though, the bore walls normally end up badly marked as well, so just a hone and lob a piston in is probably not a sufficient repair.

yep i would agree , but then i would either use a trusted engine builder or want to see for myself
