Clio Cup rear brake mot failure

  172DD Cup
hi, surprise surprise my cup has failed on its rear brakes.

apparently its recording 150% efficiency on passenger side
and 40% efficiency on driver side

i've read that they normally record 25-30% on the rear so 40% is relatively good, but bit surprised by the difference between passenger and driver

anyone any suggestions?

Hmmmm, strange. Could try a bleed? Thy didn't connect your load valve did they ? Seems a high reading for a cup?

A good reading in all fairness.

I was lucky for mine to pass at the weekend. The lad doing the MOT knew they read low, but as it was in for brakes at the same time, it passed as he knew it was as good as it was ever going to be.

They did loosen my load valve and try to fiddle around with it to get it better.

Bit concerned about that 150% though. I'd be happy arguing and appealing if I got 40% both sides. Why do u think such high figure on one side?

no they didn't touch it. they showed me on the rollers, one side stopped the roller dead, one side didn't have much effect. but they also said they can't fail on uneven braking on the rears, so the fact that one side is recording 40% should be enough to pass on the cup. cant decide if i should appeal or go and clean up the 40% piston and sliders and give the load thing a scrub to free it up.

well, turns out nothing going to that caliper but air, no fluid in the lines on that side. gonna start a new more focused thread

good news on getting it sorted, i have my cup in for mot in a few weeks, whats the problem with the cups braking on the rear?

Thought they wanted £300? to do it.

yeah not happy about it especially after saving a fair whack with me and budgie doing the gearbox but sometimes you just gotta suck it up. it's nice to be able to pick the car up from the garage with the work done and mot signed off as opposed to picking it up with no mot and a weekend planned under the car

i had a quick look at the breakdown and it was £192 for new caliper and labour to fit (£65/hour at this garage). £65 for an hour of fault finding and then £35 for something else, some of that may have been the partial retest fee. i could have done it myself for a quarter of the price, but still would have had to pay an hours diagnosis. its way way overpriced, missus took some sting out by paying £100 for me, bless her, but at least now i have a road legal car. although missus will have me laying carpet this weekend now (no thats not a rude joke)

most of the time there isn't enough pressure to lock the wheels, you can turn the wheel by hand with the brakes on.
before the mot you should consider using a cable tie to force the bias valve all the way down as this should give you extra efficiency on the brakes. i'll take a picture of mine cable tied for you so you can see what i mean.

the bias valve usually has a rod and spring against the underside of the rear of the car. what happens on non cup cars is when the boot is full or theres weight in the back, the extra weight pushes the lever down and gives you more efficiency on the rear brakes. i'm guessing that even without extra weight in the rear on the non-cups, the lever still has some pressure on it as you dont hear about non-cups failing on rear brake efficiency.
