Clio Williams track car

Im making this thread just to keep a progress log for myself really! This is my current valver track car -

Engine is high comp 1.8 but with standard rods and mild cams and emerald ecu (the engine is a proper half assed job!) 160-170bhp
Bucket seats/omp wheel
172 wide track and steering rack with wilwoods

20161106_184500_zpshxu6wtwz.jpg

Over the winter i planned on having a cage put in it and repairing the rusty bulkhead, however this Williams become available, it used to be a road rally car and has been off the road since 2001 and dry stored, the shell has absolutely no rust on it, although it does have various damage around it, It has the engine and box and apparently it runs but the fuel pump is missing (along with a lot of other things!)

There was a brief bit of panic when the reg wasn't coming up on any checks but i phoned the DVLA and they confirmed the car does exist and hasn't been on the road since 2001 and that's why it wasn't coming up

I did briefly toy with the idea of returning it to standard and selling it on but it would cost loads and it has zero history with it along with bits welded in for the cage

First job is to clean these mounting points and paint them and then get a windscreen fitted!

Its going to take me a while to get anywhere on this really as i need to break apart my valver so i can start swapping over parts, but certainly before i do that ill be getting a windscreen in the williams, i did however take out the ecu from Williams today and found it is chipped so will be interesting to take the cam cover off and see if it has some cams in there (pleeeeease!) or if its just an off the shelf chip

Great project, love the mk1's

Wish I could get round to doing something with my phase 1. Not touched it in a 18 months!

I know where to come if I want a mk1!

This looks like a lot of work. But with a decent donor already hopefully it will make some fast progress!

Looks a fun project, do love a MK1.

I've not forgotten about the pictures you sent by the way, just got distracted by being on holiday lol.

List of jobs is huge!

You have both my admiration AND sympathy taking this on. It took me nearly 18months to restore my Mk1 and it was by far the most expensive car i've ever done. Not to mention the lack of parts available... I swear I paid for most of Mat Browns wedding LoL

cleaned these then painted with kurust, will go over with black hammerite tomorrow (theres loads of these around the car but ive only done the ones by the windscreen for now so i can get a screen in it)

Fitted
20170119_164056_zpsi5llrzz2.jpg

Also fitted the door seals, thought i had a pic but i dont

Done nothing on the weekend on the williams (although i did sell the interior out of my 172 exclusive so now thats become my 3rd shed!)

Today i had displeasure of removing this manifold, anyone who has ever removed a 1.8 16v manifold will now how crap this is, the bottom 3 bolts you can get 1 click on the ratchet each turn, the person who fitted this to the williams is an absolute donut.

Had to remove the drive shaft to get the down pipe out (looks like a genuine renault sport dog bone on there to)

Success

Windscreen is booked to be done on thursday, ill be a lot happier once thats in, Tomorrow i plan on fitting my supersprint manifold and magnex exhaust, along with hammeriting the cage mounting points that sit behind the windscreen.

Essentially once the manifold and exhaust is on i should be able to dump a fuel pump in there, connect the fuel hoses and start it, although the tank has been open with no fuel pump in it for ages and is quite likely full of crap.

Keep at it, all progress is good progress. Want to sell me the valver with gold wheels yet? lol

Nice pussy btw.

No rust on the williams (it is battered though) my valver in the back ground only has rust on the bulkhead and the 3rd one i have has no rust and is in great condition, its for sale but is engineless, i think that car may end being another long term project!

My plan for the wiliams is to get it running, get my other cars interior in it (seats dash etc) then give it to my friend in Littlehampton on my week off to help (Do) the brakes and 172 track bits, mot it then use it! ive been speaking to a guy about painting but thats a long way off

Today the first thing i done was remove this stupid starter motor bracket, its not needed and is in the way and heavy, makes it a massive pain to change the starter motor if it ever needs to be done, also removed the heatshield as only one mounting point left on it and that is the one on the bracket! (ill use a 172 starter heat shield)

20170124_141835_zps0iuk1xyd.jpg

And off
20170124_142350_zpsxj0stlcx.jpg

Manifold fitted, its a spare supersprint i had from another car
20170124_155425_zpsb73arenu.jpg

I also fitted the down pipe but it is slightly different to the one that is fitted to my valver which ment i couldnt do a good job of mounting my exhaust, although i did get the exhaust fitted

20170124_155453_zpsyklkyz6u.jpg

I have the car turning over now, and i cleaned out most of the crap that was in it
20170124_161300_zps3jnug7g2.jpg

Tomorrow im hoping to get it started, the issue is the car has been sitting with no fuel pump in it for years and the tank is full of muck, im going to get the hoover out tomorrow and see what i can get out of it and then wipe everything i can see with petrol soaked cloths, im hoping i can then just drop a pump in it and run the car.

Jobs for tomorrow -
hammerite brackets that will be covered by the windscreen
clean tank
fit fuel pump
start car

Good progress. Where are you getting all the bits from for this? What's happening to the valver with the gold rims?

Need to get cracking with my williams also, looks like you have a lot of work to do on it!

Im breaking it, using all the best bits on the williams, i still have the itb'd one which is also being broken but will keep it as a rolling shell as its solid and in very good condition, the parts are coming from my shed/other cars etc!

Shame that, I really like the look of it. Sure you don't want to sell it? Could even de-spec it a bit lol

You have three MK1s and I can't even find one lol

So yesterday all i managed to do was hammerite the cage brackets as i had to do other things as parts of the other cars were sold and needed to come off (the white speedlines, some plastics etc)

Im not going to start the car with the current fuel tank in it as it is literally full of crap, dust/dirt etc, it would no doubt ruin the injectors and fuel lines, so im going to wait until i have broken L21 FUD and use the tank out of that

Today the windscreen was swapped over, which means i will be able to start sorting the dash out but again i want to break the other car first as i want the space
20170126_164820_zpsl0ik08r6.jpg

With the screen swapped it ment i could get a better look at the fibreglass that is/was under the dash top L21 FUD
20170126_165739_zps2mcil2o2.jpg

With a little tap the whole top fibreglass piece came off revealing some wire mesh
20170126_165830_zps9dsama7y.jpg

I took the wool out and then tapped the bottom and the whole bottom fibreglass piece fell off

This weekend i hope to rip in to that car and get it completely stripped

that's horrific
Blimey!!!
Looks like you're going to need all the spare cars you've got, to repair the botch ups.

Slow progress over the last week or so (rain every single day) i had been nibbling at L21 FUD taking a few bits off here and there over the last week and today i moved it outside the yard and gutted it, it will be going for scrap tomorrow or tuesday

20170205_134949_zpss7i3v6rz.jpg

Struggled with a couple of the fuel tank bolts so tipped it up
20170205_140553_zpsuewag3ew.jpg

And a very good friend of mine from France managed to find me some Williams wheels and center caps

My main problem is having time to get anything done, the whole week is taken up with work and picking my son up from school (and Rain) The Williams is going to Gary's on the 13th to have the suspension and track etc done and i was hoping to have the dash and interior all done by then but i dont think i will which is very annoying as Gary said he would get it mot'd but it wont be finished.

Only just spotted this thread as I've been off here for a while.
Any more progress?
Seriously need to get a thread going for mine...

Update time, Before the car went to Gary i put a dash in it, the car went to Gary and had the following work done, i would have loved to have done this stuff myself but the cosntant rain and mud was a big problem, so Gary done -
Rear shocks
fitted the fuel tank from my other car
the car then ran
fitted front suspesion, pms top mounts, 172 cup wishbones, ph1 172 front drive shafts, 172 hubs, wilwoods, braided front and rear brake lines (and every other brake line as they all burst when bleeding)
Cambelt/aux belt/rotor/leads/oil/gear oil

The car was then ready for its mot BUT the crank seal started to leak so it was engine out, i had a new clutch from another car so that went on along with a new crank seal.
Pms shifter was fitted but Gary couldnt get any gears when it was running, i had to drop some parts off and get a few bits for my 172 cup, it was the clutch pedal playing up so i adjusted it and got all gears, we then fitted the bonnet cable and i left while Gary booked it in for mot, the radiator then failed! so i ordered a new one to be delivered to him and the mot Passed a few days later and i went and got it and drove it home!

Here it is after getting it home, it ran great and pulls better than i expected, however there is some interesting whining coming from the box, no crunches though, i do have a spare williams box and a 182 box so ill probably run this one until it breaks.

20170612_184758_zpsowwgaysw.jpg

I had to changed the steering column today as the weld on the one in the car had failed, when i changed it it become apparent the ignition barrell was broken and would not be able to swap it over which was ok as the drivers door lock wouldnt lock as the rod had broken, the car had 2 keys, 1 for the ignition and drivers door 1 for the passenger door and then none for the boot locks (always the case with mk1's)
Luckily i have a complete mk1 matching lock set, With the boot lock! and 2 keys, so i swapped it all over (this will be one of very few mk1's where 1 key opens all the locks!)

20170616_101507_zpsjqgsscrs.jpg

Removed rear wiper and spray and plugged
20170616_104853_zpshmyassua.jpg

20170616_122035_zpsv1ljo5xn.jpg

I wire brushed/cleaned/painted all of the cage mountings as they had surface rust from the welding (done it on all of them)

20170616_113829_zpsjh05t5cw.jpg

20170616_121451_zps394iy9xj.jpg

Fitted the missing steering cowling, i used one without a hole for stereo controls (came from the same car as the lock set and the dash board which had only done 34k so everything is in really good condition)

20170616_111246_zpsnq7khja2.jpg

And my favorite part of the day was fitting the steering wheel
20170616_121927_zpshuw76d5a.jpg

To finish off i went to a local fixings place and picked up all the bolts i need for the cage (all the rear ones were missing, like someone had started to take it out then gave up) I also picked up a some wd40 and am soaking the torsion bars as i plan to take the suspension down tomorrow and set the camber at the front

20170616_140138_zpsrmklp44x.jpg

20170616_140742_zpsgntxtd9f.jpg

I have also ordered the rear 3 windows in plastic, i have manual windy windows to go in the front, got a lot of parts still to fit!

Battle was won, it took a long time though.

This is how we started
