Colour Coding: a Diy Job ?

  ATS CUP'd Dynamique
I am going to take off the gash plastic on my clio : side bump strip and the front and back plastic on the bumper

I have read a guide on here on how to paint them and was wondering is it easy enough to get a good finish and how do you get the front and back bumper plastic strips out ?

cheers
Tom

nope. Plastics too bumpy, you'll be there for days getting it smooth without high build primer. I just got mine done for 70 quid in a bodyshop, not worth the hassle imo

I've done it myself hence why i'm speaking from experience. i do have pics but dont really show the quality etc so pointless posting them

if you wanna try it yourself you'll need an electric sander, various grades of sandpaper, plastic primer, colour and laquer. start with the electric then work though the grades of sandpapoer, then a few layers of plastic primer, sand that smooth with 800 grit. apply colour until colour match achieved, leave over night to dry, then laquer. Start with a dust coat and then a thick coat only applied in warm sun to avoid clouding

What colour? If using metallic’s its very important to keep the can at a consistent distance from what ever your spraying and an even flow or you'll get shades in it

  Lots of Alfas
This is my old Clio, I did the mirrors and fog light covers myself with Halfords primers, spray and laquer, I would only do small parts yourself, get a bodyshop to do larger parts. At least you can take them off and not have your car off road.

my uncles a mechanic and has resprayed his 1960's triumph herald perfectly by himself so i'll just get him to do it i think.... I'm not gonna risk it by doing it myself

would someone be able to post the link to the guide to sraying the bump strips please, cuz i can only find the guide to taking them off and the guide to spraying the spoiler (or is it the same as spraying the spoiler?)

thanks

sorry to thread jack here, but middo... would it be possible to not use the electric sander??? I have quite a bit of patience, but would it just be ridiculously hard?? I really want to colour code myself as i really cant afford to pay to have it done (places down here aint cheap) its a mk2 ph1 so the plastic is pretty shabby!!!

I dont think you'll ever get that really deep shine that bodyshops will get with the more expensive paints and laquers they use.

Course you can Preparation and patience is the key!

Although having a nice warm spray room spray gun helps alot

how did you go about getting the right colour for your car i knw this prob sounds stupid but im going to colour code my black clio and i think the actual car is faded abit so i dont want to spray the bumpers if its going to look darker (if that makes sense lol)

yeah i thought that it looked matte...so since the pic i have laquered it more

if your clios paint is faded you can always t-cut it..then you can colourcode it properly
