Coming from a Focus ST........

So, due to me losing my job at the very worst time of year and needing some cash and something a bit smaller Im about to move to a Black Gold 182.
Now the fuel on the Focus is pretty poo, not as bad as everyone says but still poo, so Im thinking the Clio will be a bit better.

Anyway, Im just wondering if anyone else has made the same move or has any advice that they can give me. I previously owned a Mountuned Fiesta 185 before my Focus, and really missed the go kart handling of that so the Clio must be on a par, if not better?

Just generally looking for some advice on what to look for, and on the general looking after and costs of these things?

Thanks everyone,

Ryan :D

well ive just got 33mpg out of the last tank on my 172, that was mixed driving. Some spirited, some steady and a little bit of motorway.

im on lowering springs and the handling is very very good, better than my previous EG Civic.

You won't regret the move
Absolutely. I'm a ford fan, bought a Black Gold 182 for the wife last year, one of the Best/Fun cars, I've ever driven, LOVE IT (when I can get hold of the keys).
It came with the Recaro seat option which makes a big difference and Magnex Exhaust which sounds nice.
Apart from the usual Cam/Aux Belt & tensioner change If not done already and use Quality Oil, the BEST advice is found on here.......

I moved from a focus st mountune to a clio 200 (same speed as 182) off line naff all in it in gear times the st would have the edge all day long

The handling of the Clio will make the focus feel like a yatch on rough seas

Dont miss my focus one bit.

You will miss the build for sure! Other than that, a Clio or CTR will do the job nicely

My mate has focus st and to about 110 clio is just as quick if not a tad faster, but as soon as you put the clio in 5th it feels like a 1.2 in comparison to the focus, it will ripple past lol. Also the 182 may not be able to keep with one aswell as the 172 cup as its purely down to acceleration that you manage to get away at first. The handling of the clio s***s all over the focus. Build quality wise your in for a shock coming down from focus to clio and you will notice alot of annoying rattles. I always feel like im sat in a tin can thats ready to break after ive been in his car and i get back into the clio. Anyway i could go on all day comparing these cars so basically, The clio is more fun to drive but is poorly made and have a tendancy to be very unreliable. The focus is slightly quicker car but nowhere near as much fun to drive and although it is quicker doesnt really feel it cos of how well its put togther.

  172 cup
I sold my focus rs mate for a cup and I miss the turbo. I was the same you can only have what you can aford. As for better car the focus any day.

I can *just* hang on to my mates ST in my mildly modified 172*.

I find it very hard to believe that anything but a TB'd Cup would get anywhere near a tuned ST, never mind be a decent amount quicker.

As for fuel consumption, for what they are, they're bloody good. My missus was drving mine for a while on her 25 mile commute and was getting 40mpg quite easily.

*I also have my rear seats removed atm, although that's because I've been using it as a Clio van for abour 3 months whilst working on my house/garden, not because I live my life a 1/4 mile at a time lol

I test drove an ST for an hour and thought it was a lovely car, but it lacked the spirit and fun that I get from the clio. Roll on power, comfort, build quality etc it was far superior and was generally a very sensible car but was nowhere near as involving as a megane, let alone the clio.

I usually average around 18-20mpg in the RS and they're meant to be slightly better than the ST in that regard (allegedly). Most I've seen as an average is around 32 doing 50mph on the motorway. The closest I've ever come to 40 is 99.9 when resetting it at the top of a hill and rolling down on the overrun. Roffles.

Got 7.5mpg on track. PMSL.

The mountune st is seriously quick. I can't see any 172 living with one without throwing silly money at it. Iirc, a mountune st is slightly quicker (straight line) than a standard focus rs?

They reckon about the same. I think Evo clocked one a few tenths faster, but IIRC the RS driver wasn't trying ;)

RS driver was reported to have said 'Dude. I almost had you!"

  Mazda 3 MPS Mk1
On track the clio is far superior in the bends but the in gear power / torque on the straights is much better with the ST. Handling wise the couple I've driven have never inspired confidence.

Although the RS is probably a completely different kettle of fish!

i've had a play with an st in a straight line from standing start an i got of an a couple of car lengths infront an at 115 the gap hadn't closed but then we had to slow down due to a roundabout ;)

But that's just not true, is it? A couple of car lengths is a fair amount, no standard 172 will do that. Not a chance.

  172 ph1
defo not it will be down to the driver if its a cup or ph1 as theres really not much init it probly till about 70-80 id say then focus will probably kill it!

I love all of the 'if its a cup or a ph1 its got a much better chance than a ph2 172' b*llocks. The ph1 has a very very very slight advantage straight line speed (eg .1 of a second MAX) and this is the same for the cup aswell, the point of the cup was to make it a better track car, hence cup suspension etc. Just because you have a cup or a ph1 it doesn't instantly mean you have the extra speed to go out mullering ST's etc... Infact you'll still struggle to pull ahead against a ph2 172 FF with extra passengers and a dog in the boot in a straight line drag.

I'm looking to keep my 172 for another year and upgrade to an ST. I like the 172 and for the money they cost they are very hard to beat, providing you can live with the odd rattle here and there. Reliability wise, provided it has been looked after through its life, not been run dry of fluids and has had the belts done on time and properly it should run forever. It wont feel as quick as an ST and you'll miss turbo, but at the same time the clio can hold its own and will make you smile when start throwing it around.

Not jumping on the cup bandwagon. But....my cup with exhaust/breather mods beat a standard ST by a second at a 1/4 mile day.

I know standard Vs Modified is not a fair comparison but his best time on the day was 15.2 mine was 14.1.

I appretiate they are nice/capable cars. Just my experience.

I very much doubt a lightly modified 172 cup would get 14.1 on the 1/4 mile, even cammed there isnt a chance.

Also just lol at all this talk of the 172 being easily quicker than a st some people are on drugs, std for std the st and cup from a standstill would propably be on par to 60 after that its bye bye clio.

Anyway back on topic, op you will not regret the move the cliosports of any guise are fantastic cars you will definetly enjoy driving it.

not to get into an argument mate but thats a load of s**te....and i didnt say to go out and start racing st's the ph1 has half a second 0-60 times on a ph2 fact! me and a lad off here had a go against eachother and he admitted mine completley standard and his with a sports centre section i was pulling away from him with ease so....

  ph1 172
@hollandcup. Obviously you drive a 182cup so don't know the capabilities of a proper cup;)

I'm certainely not knocking ST's. A friend owns one, I have driven it and I like them.

14.1 seconds is easily achievable with a healthy engine a few breather mods and abit of weight reduction.

lol true, i must experience the god like speed and handling of the 172 cup prior to making a comment about their capabilities, i feel i should be stoned to death tbh.

Your car is simply a freak mate, best i have seen is 14.8 for lightly modified 182 which is basically the same speed wise.

Clocks must be out ;)

Fair enough mate.

As we all know RS Clios vary so much bhp/wise. As do other marques, proven on the RR day I attended recently for various reasons.

Clock definately wasn't out i timed it on my casio calculator watch to;)
