Only way I can think, is to use set up standard internet connections (leased line or similar) then create a VPN using routers etc. I'm no expert though.

already have that but without sdsl or leasd line the upload is far too slow

even with leased line at say 3-4mb its too slow really need 10MB

Without spending $$$$$$$$ you gonna have trouble getting a 10Mbit line !! Throw enough money at it and you could lay a fibre.

My place is currently paying £600/month for a 2mbit uncontended full duplex line

i was just wondering thats all 10MB lan extension isnt very much iirc about 10k

we have a problem with this other company of ours they dont put the tape in every day ! so if they have a disaster they are fucked

in york we are rather limited for comms though atleast off our exchange anyway the other site is irthlingboro near northhampton

If you really need 10mb then there's not much else you can do. Either you pay for them or your stuck with what you got. Our 10mb line costs around 13k a year inc support. Not sure how much the initial install was though.

Cheap solution?

You mock, but I read scientists have been able to get transfer data at about 5-10mbit throughput out of two cans connected by string by modulating the string at different frequencies. With further harmonic frequency tuning they reckon they could get it nearer 100mbit !!!

Can you not just try and get them to ensure they change the tape. Or remote in every day at say 4.00pm and ensure a tape is inserted if not ring and shout at someone.

we already do that lol its the accountants job but he just forgets alot

i mean i sometimes forget ours but i have more to do ;)

I do find it comical how some companies will spedn £KKKKKKKK to do what your saying because of someones lazyness (Accountant) but wont give people a pay increase or employee someone else LOL

me either as a backup it be ok but tbh it not fast enough

i think we should just elctrocute the bloke every time he forgets :0 but my boss wanted me to see what else we could do to back it up up here instead

LOL what happens if he isnt in a strong 3G area? Plus even with 3G I doubt its enough bandwidth and not reliable enough to be doing a backup across. I would trust it

You actually think i thought it through? lol.

PMSL thats very true

Thats a good idea though to be fair if you cant get ADSL or such shizzle I guess. I assume it just connects to 3G and then pumps it out via Wireless

How about buy the guy an alarm clock ?
or setup a script to message him at 4.30pm every workday ?

You know.. till he gets the hint !

I have to swap the backup drives everyday and I dont forget.. FFS give him a warning then sack the fucker !

Most Software Backup solutions even MS inbuilt Server back on SBS (Assuming he is using Windows) have built in notification to send an email at a specific time to do this anyway!

maybe i will just send him e-mails every 5 minutes lol

Outlook Express ftw

Set a meeting for 4:30pm using the calendar, and set it to appear every day.
I have to do ours and this is what I do.

Failing that, for £7k a year you could hire a 'office junior' fresh out of school to do just the back-up.......cheaper then £13k for 10mb:D

What kind of service do you require?
Simple answer would be for a backup is a autoloader for backup.

As for a line, if you speak to BT they can lay down a copper wire and lease a ISDN if you so wish say 64kbps constant.

Maybe consider offsite backups.

Connect them both to the Internet then a VPN connection between the two.

the backups are to large to go via adsl

service 10MB sync would do i think its only about 60GB of data

we already have a vpn connection but thats going from their 512k adsl connection to our 2 mb leased line that just about copes with one person using it !

LOL thats slow

I have a script I use to send out backup reports on the tight small companies that use XP as a "server" and NTBackup. Easy enough to modify via Scheduling to send out an Email of your choice LOL

OR even better set his background via a Policy LOL. Create one saying change tape at X.XX and dont let him change it

if the data doesn't change much each day then this is a great service

http://www.intechnology.co.uk/?ID=8

backed up over their backbone network across the UK and can be restored in seconds.

Its based on the data change each day, not the amount you are storing so if the change data is small it can be cost effective.

Seconded, made me laugh at my last place, and hence why I left.

Still makes me mad as my other half is still working there, the director of her dept is on his 110k a year salary, plus rediculous benfits and bonuses, yet they won't give her an extra £500-1000.

As said, cheaper to get an autoloader and stick a week or twos worth of tapes in? Although for DR that's not very good at all unless someone is picking up/moving the backups each day.
