Cup 172 V Trophy

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
would have thought thats a simple question to answer, what would be the point of a trophy if it was the same as a 172?

I'm not trying to start a 'mines better than yours' debate! I've been discussing RS Clios with the bloke who thinks that a Calibra is the worlds best handling car! He asked if my Cup would be quicker than a Trophy on a track. This came about because in Evo a Clio 182 Cup was quicker than his 'hero',the Monaro VXR......and he just won't believe it.
It doesn't matter if its going to be just 0.0025 secs in it.With all i've heard about the handling of the Trophy l am curious to know how much quicker it would make it than the Cup. ie slightly more power/torque but slightly more weight.
Thats all.....

Yeah fair point, it's just these threads usually turn into endless pointless arguments for some reason.

To be honest there wouldn't be much difference between all the RS models, but the Trophy and the 172 Cup would be very close. Its difficult to know really as most of the Trophy's still only have very low mileage and lots of owners report that the engines are still very tight.

I'd expect the weight advantage of the 172 Cup would easily cancel out the extra few bhp, and then the Trophy's suspension should probably just give it the edge, but there's so many variables.

Cheers...thought it would be close.I guess a trackday meet would be the best time to find out.

never been in a cup or trophy but the calibra does handle really well (mates got a turbo)

the thing with the RenaultSport clios is you get good ones and bad ones power wise.

The trophy would walk it.

im sure it be better driving though , lol .:)

on paper and on the track , the trohpy is quicker , thats why they made it . TO MAKE MO MONEY . LUV the trophy interior though .

The Cup would push the trophy around the track, but once it went past, it wouldn't go far very quickly.

I had only driven a trophy a few times and was able to keep up with arronc in his cup around brands in September or when ever it was. I let him past me on my out lap and sat on his bumper in the trophy. Where I pulled, he gained in other places.

We then did the same in the megane trophy.

KullySport - you are talking out of your posterior.

I never thought I'd ever see the words "Calibra" and "handle well" in the same sentence. I drove a 2.0 16V one years ago when they were new, it understeered for England. It felt just like the 1.8 Cav I'd been using from work, only with a harder ride and nice leather. lol

That said this one was lowered with an LSD (2.0 16v Turbo calibra 4x4)

It's all down to driver!!!! I can't keep up with my mates 1.6 Astra round the lanes in my Cup!!! because he's such a dam good driver and pretty dam mad!

I sure some 1.2 drivers could show up a fair few 2.0 drivers in the right conditions. It's been done before right Fred???

  172, Tiguan
I seriously doubt there would be much difference. Having an identical driver, identical mileages, identical wind resistance, identical fuel levels etc etc etc etc etc etc etc....... the Trophy maybe tenths quicker.

LOL! according the 182 v Williams thread, the Williams wwould have probably lapped the 172/182 after a few laps

Yeh...Partly agree with this...the trophy has a superior suspension set up, other than that there the same car...So logic dictates that it would win providing it was the same driver.

PMSL. You sure you haven't been to the King Stromba school for starting controversial threads? ;)

LOL - Thought the same when I saw it mentioned!

I drove the 8v, 16v and turbo after selling my Astra a few years ago, the 16v and Turbo where ok in a straight line, alot was left to be desired in the corners though (like most Vauxhalls of that era).

The turbo had potential - shame thay have a habit of easting transfer boxes and going rusty.

  172 cup TT
Ive owned two calibras, the 150 16v, and a V6.. both were like boats round a roundabout, and almost fall over :) .. My cup destroys them both... and, yeh the turbos are fast (when working!) but arent they one of the "most unreliable cars ever?" - told by an old Vaux mechanic i once knew

I have a vid of me chasing Nik in his Trophy I thnk it was, round Donnington, was good only manged to get past him on the final straight :D

Looked well on track did the Trophy, in comparison Chris n Nics Cup round Oulton looked the nuts too, seemed a lot more composed than the full fat 172's, do they have the same supsension setup, I've no idea

Cups have a slightly wider track iirc...mainly due to the speedlines tho. I'll be putting the 172 to the test next month at knockhill. See how it goes.

  172, Tiguan
Standard for standard though mate. ;)

There is a difference, I've driven both numerous times.

Thought there might be something different on the Cups, the do seem to sit better on the track, less leaning than the 172's

I drove eddes DCI around the Nurburgring in September for a lap and we overtook lots of stuff. People call the DCI slow but we had a couple of decent BMW's moving out the way for us so it does come down to the driver imho.
