Cup question

  FN2 Type R +MK6 Golf

Just been on autotrader and looking for deals on 182s etc etc,and cant help but notice a mass of cups for sale.Theres even two silver ones(90 in uk)there must be 4 pages of them altogether.

Anyone feel there may be some deflection to the dark side and these people might be buying a 182 or megane rs

Considering these cars are quite rare it makes strange veiwing to see them all there.Kinda like when animals know theres going to be an earthquake or something and they start barking and running off..lol

Just an observation ,not a wind up guys.

I think its more to do with the type of person who buys one. Theyre real petrolhead motoring enthusiasts - change their car every time the Next Big Thing comes out. So theres a lot of turnover. No problem there.

Its obviously not quite a collectors item yet then. ;)

Im sure there are plenty of 172s being swapped for 182s also. :D

Yeah it seems a bit strange. But like you say I think that quite a lot of people are swapping them for the new big thing.

I know I wont be swapping my Cup for a long time!

Theres still loads left with 0 milage being released through the dealers. I searched for the same, and found Renault Solihull has 3 Cups, all with under 10 miles on the clock.

Good time to buy one. :)

The used ones are flooding the market. Prices MUST be going down. I know Ill consider selling the 182 a few months before the next RS clio becomes available.

From what i can see the cup isnt holding the residual it said it would.

I think it has too many variants and because the 182 is out now most people want the new thing which is as fast and has the goodies.IMO

The 172 will be even worse then, same equipment but noticeably slower. Nothing "special" about it now as well, at least a Cups a Cup if you know what I mean. ;)

I beg to differ but the cup is on its own because the 182 is only 10 bhp ahead of the 172 and they both have the goodies on board, which to joe public is what counts.

I reckon the number of Cups for sale probably reflects the sort of punter who buys a brand new hot hatch. Theyre probably less likely to keep a car for a very long time and like to have a new car.

My grandad would only ever buy a new car, right until his last. He had about 30 in all (starting when he was about 40 years old!). Just imagine the amount of depreciation he endured!

Theres nowt wrong with liking the latest car. You do pay a lot for the privilege, but you do get to enjoy the car at its best. My Williams only has 60k on the clock, but itll never be as good as the day it left the showroom without me spending silly money.

In a few years when ppl are looking for Clio RSs they will either look out for a Cup or a 182 imho. The 172 offers nothing different to a 182 apart from being slower, the Cup is something different and will appeal to another group of buyers. All imho of course.

But only to a limited few who know what it is.What im saying is the two other models will appeal to a wider spectrum of buyers who may not know the history behind any of the cars but in todays age of gadgets look for the best deal.

but i do agree with what you say too in some respects.

Cant believe no one picked up on the fact that I was being sarcastic when I said I am swapping my cup for a 182!

Err yours is not standard, and I had a passenger. DOH!

Have been against standard cups and nothing in it, much to the annoyance of the cup owner!

where abouts?

Did the same thing happen when they changed from a Mk 1 172 to a Mk 2 172.

Were there suddenly loads of Mk 1s for sale?

Isnt the point of the cup not that its gonna be hugely faster, but that its that bit more nimble with less weight??? And isnt the suspension setup different from a regular 172, again adding to the nimbleness?

And while im here, is the suspension setup on a 182 "cup" just the same as a 172 cup, but with the new Exalto tyres, and if so, can you fit the new tyres on a 172 cup?

Blimey. didn;t think id have so many questions when i started.

Cheers

Yes and no.

The cup was designed as a special car for those who liked it raw, from a 172 point of view they made changes to the suspension and made the track a bit wider and made it lighter so as to knock 1/2 second to 60 and 1 sec to 100 as standard(before you lot start.)They made the glass thinner and removed the A.B.S,air con and a few other bits and excluded leather cos it was so heavy(not). On the bedford autodrome circuit it laps 2.0secs quicker than a 172 so yes its more nimble and its turn in will be sharper too because of an increased castor angle and wider track.

So that was the case plain and simple until the 182 surfaced, they gave it 10bhp more than the 172 but saved some weight and gave it back its thicker glass, improved the induction and moved the torque lower down to aid grunt. They fitted the cup pack which was an option and it has a slightly wider track again than the cup,the castor angle has moved a further 3 degrees, the springs and dampers are a tad more stiff than a cup and it sits 3mm lower and also has the exaltotyres which have a thicker side wall to aid handling.Acceleration wise the 182 has posted the fastest 0-60 time of all clios(V6 excluded)but the 0-100 is almost identical to cup.0-60 is reckoned because of 3mm lower stance and slightly wider tyres to aid traction on take off.

The rims on a cup/182 are the same width so exaltos shouldnt be a problem and i think a couple of peeps have done this already

Hope that helps,ian:D

I dont quite think they have the same nostalgia as a williams or nsx or 911

Great cars all the same and the fact that they wont be too expensive in the long run means more cars at sensible prices for joe public like me.
