whats the bloody point! Anybody wanting luxuries is much better off buying a 172Mk2?
I want a cup with LESS: less weight, less money so that I can thrash two of them a year, etc. I also want proper race seats, bigger/better brakes, etc etc. I want reno to encourage us to use the car on track, I want performance mods approved by reno instead of most people having to hide them!
The only reason theyre selling so many cups is because thats exactly what people want! DOH??

Thats going to be interesting now cause the reason the cup ATW figures where higher than the 172 was the fact it didnt have to lug the aircon pump round off the auxillary drive belts, so this will mean the cup with aircon will have a lower BHP at the wheels than a normal aircon free cup.
yes Mo--, exactly. Renault could do their brand image wonders by sponsoring/encouraging track tuition etc (Jeremys doing his best, but thats not widely seen). The appeal of the cup is its raw image (just read all the magazines) and when you have brand exposure like that youd be daft to lose it.

If you are indeed planning to offer "softer" options for the cup, fire your marketing director and hire a decent one.
You have a unique chance to capitalise on the Cups obvious sales success. Its pitched at the right price, it appeals to the right audience and youre getting excellent press. Why do you want to change that? As Mo says, Evo magazine (not saying its good or bad, it just has good circulation) emphatically says the cup is the "new 205 GTI". Do you have the faintest idea what other car manufacturers would give to get an accolade like that??
Just embrace the track/lean/raw image and milk it to its full extent: track days, approved mods (cant you guess how much cash we all spend on our cars, wouldnt you rather get some of that money as wed happily spend it on Renault approved mods?)

I agree with you. Sadly, Rome wasnt built in a day. The climate control option has been opened simply because other countries have asked for it and therefore Ive opened the option in the UK. I think the take up will be very low as if you really want a/c, you might as well spend the extra £800 and have all the other 172 goodies.
Funny, all the Renault advertising describes the Cup as a trackday car.
And apparently everybody with a sporting Renault of any kind is invited for the free two day intro of the new V6 at Nogaro. That sounds like a step in the right direction to me. I wonder will UK Renault have the same sort of offer...
It would be impossible to seel the Cup in a lot of places without the AC. And the more stuff that Renault loads onto the Cup, the higher the profit margin. Just so long as they still offer a bare bones model who cares?

i think the trackday thing is a very clever marketing tool that renault used to make a shed load of cash on spare 172 shells,
i cant see more than 10% of cups spending more time on the track, it makes sense to get one with aircon if people like,
most will spend all their life on the roads with maybe the odd day on the track,

I like the concept of the cup but I think it would be better if renault widened the gap between the low down dirty cup with its track day pedigree and thrash the knackers off me attitude and make the 172 a more understated but yet just as mad if you push it. I think theyre sort of halfway there with that line of thinking already but to be a tru classic I think they would need to make the cup even more track/ race orientated, not just a stripped down version of the 172 which despite all the marketing and hype is exactly what the cup really is at the moment.
Renault are F&*%ing tw*ts - make up your mind - the cup is an homologation special (Eddd back me up with your list of homologated cars for the FIA) and wasnt meant to have loads of buttons, aircon and traction contro and abs - how many track cars or competition cars have any of those?????? People buy cups for that purpose - THEY DONT WANT THOSE EXTRAS!!!! I have ABS, leather, aircon, xenons, thicker glass and a spare wheel in my 1600 - so what ?- I dont need then and wouldnt care if they werent there!! If you want those extras buy a 172 it will be cheaper than buying a cup with them added on! And if thats the case -- u obviously dont get the point of the lightweight 172 CUP which should have lighter and totally striped out IMOH with race seats a cgae and harnesses oh and am engine cut of switch.............

Cupsize, why do you think Renault are F&*%ing tw*ts? They are offering aircon for people who live in hot countries. If I lived in a country where average heat was in the eighties I would want aircon on any car I had. In the UK, if people dont want the extras they dont have to buy them. I always though choice was a good thing?
try sell a car in HK where in car temps reach near 50 deg, too hot to sit in......then youll know.
Homologation, dont be a tit, no car has to run with the freakin aircon or buttons! I dont see any WRC cars running half the rd crap, and the 206 shouldnt even be allowed to race, its only cause if the stoopidly large bumpers that it meets minimum length.
the cup is there to get people like you who think its the be all and end all of clios. which it probably is. BUT, its nto there so they can go rallying, as they dont, its not there for tracday mania, as its only a tiny bit diff suspension wise.
And IF THEY DONT WANT THOSE EXTRAS, sont bloody buy them, hence it being an option you silly billy!

For crying out loud CUPSIZE, the Cup isnt a racing car however much youd like to think that it is. Its a 172 with a few less toys, made more affordable for the customers. Ive said on many occasions that I thnk the Cup is a great idea and I stand by that - anything that makes a performance Renault more accesible is good. But calling Renault <A target=_blank href= "mailto:#@&*888">#*$$£!## and anything else is out of order - theyre just trying to give the customers what they want!! Get Real! If you want a racing car just go and buy one!
The one main difference between the Cup and the MINI Cooper S is the fact that the MINI Cooper S has the supercharger. Change the pulleys and voila, instant horsepower. Same with a turbo car, mess with the boost and an Evo goes from 280HP to 340HP for very little money. A naturally aspirated car needs far more work as any of those who have pleayed with their engines will tell you.
Compare apples to apples and forget about the turbo cars. they are in another class. I believe the FIA figured a multiplication of about 2.14 for turbo cars in F1 years ago. In other words to cmpete in the 3.0litre F1 at the time, a turbo car could only be 1.4 litres. And we know that the turbos monopolised the series, with Renault leading the revolution.

2500 examples need to be produced in a 12 month period initially. You will note that the 172/RenaultSport is also homologated but at a higher weight.
Now that the car is homolgated, they can offer the climate control etc. Whilst these items are indeed removed from a car for racing purposes, the weight that they contribute cant be. In other words it has to be possible for someone to buy a car that comes close to the homolgated minimum weight.
I havent read the yellow book lately but I remember that the competition seats installed in Group N cars had to be ballasted up to the weight of the stock seats that they replaced. The rules are quite specific.
The 172 and cup are not race cars, but you would be surprised just how close they are to Gr N cars. Check out the specs on the lnk that TimO172 provided.

u need Renualt to hand over a foam filter, to hand over a chip that has been round for ages, supply seats that you could get anywhere else.....
No wonder there are only a few truely good psycologists about, too much weird stuff hapening in peoples brains!

It would be nice to see the Renault bits first, then make an informed decision as to the value versus the sftermarket suppliers. I personally would like to see what they have on offer. Ralliart did a great job with bits for the Evo and even had most everything catalogued online.
Ive sent my money to Alpine and have yet to get a catalogue. I ordered one for the Willy and one for the Ragnotti.
If the seats, for instance, are unique to RenaultSport, and the price is fair, I would lean that way to preserve a bit of "authenticity", if for no other reason.

BenR, whats your problem mate everytime I post something about the Cup your on your box having a go.
Eddds right, in the end Mitsubishi took over from Ralliart cause they were making so much money. So took they name away and started to do the stuff themselves. The orginal Ralliart is not called Extreme Motors. Ive got an Lancer GSR which was RS spec (Race Specification, like Cup to 172) so had vinyl seats. I found a scraped Evo 4 and stuck that interior in, fitted with no problems. No messing around trying to get brackets to fit Etc.
Just cause Renault supplied it wouldnt mean I would buy or infact get them to fit it. I havent got the time to be running around trying to match this and that so it fits.
Renualt need to wake up and look at Mitsubishis way for selling and upgrading sports cars for the masses. Losing a lot of money, should set up specialist garages where service and parts are for the Sport range of cars.

Like the lad said above, subaru with there prodrive options etc,there is a niche in the market for dealer approved mods, because people value the warranty, especially if you own a scoob like i did !
Oh, one more thing, ABS is for pussys, learn how to brake, not saying i am the best driver around, far from it infact, but the best mod you could do to your car is learn how to drive it !
