Cutting a back box question

Car  E30 318iS x2
Got a seibring back box.

Not keen on having the shiney tubes so was looking at chopping them off the getting the welders at work to put some 90degree bends on and make it a stealth.

But just had a look down the chrome pipes and inside there are two little pipes coming out of the box and the chrome pipes are just welded on over the top meaning I dont have to bother.

I'm just wondering before i take a grinder to them, whether the chrome pipes actualy do anything to the noise or whether they are just looks (which i obv suspect)
