D40 / 400D Pic Request

  #174
Been wanting an SLR for ages as I'm fed up with the quality of my point and shoot. Pretty sure I'll go for the D40 as I like the feel of it (and the price!)

I've looked on the net for example pics but most of them are taken by pros so arn't really a good example of the sort of pics I'd be able to take lol.

So, I was wondering if people could post some pics they've took with their D40 or maybe 400D? Ideally with the kit lense or with another lense but nothing that costs silly money! Particularly interested in night/low light pics...

Cheers! :approve:

Decent glass is everything. But doesnt need to be expensive, im sure a few guys have samples of a 400d with a 50 f1.8.

D40 with £70 50mm f1.8 - be prepared to use manual focus.

Or you could buy my D50?

Cheers for the pics so far :) I've been told to spend the money on a basic SLR and a decent lense rather than a better SLR if this would be best? I think I'd probably keep the kit lense for general pics e.g. of stationary cars etc and then get something like a 70 - 300 lense for motorsport pics.

nein the 18-55 kit lens on the 400 is awful the 18-55is kit lens from teh 40d and the 450d is much better

the cheap 70-300 canon lens also isnt very good the sigma is a better deal

Awesome, love how vivid the colours are!

Cheers, heard the sigma was good, IIRC its about 130 quid?

Love the pics with the 17-55 f2.8 IS they're sweet :approve: shame it's about 600 quid tho lol

These were all taken with a D40 and standard kit lense. This is my first DSLR and I'm no Pro

They look awesome to say it's the standard lens! Have they been changed in ps tho?

Clart: Thanks for the offer, but I want a new one with warrenty really.

You won't see ANY difference between the 400D + D40 IQ wise, especially with web sized images that have seen post processing. The 400D has the better features, auto focus etc but if the Nikon handles better then go with that.

For low light pictures both are going to be pants, having VR/IS kit lenses will help a little but won't be enough for any action. You can get a 50mm f/1.8 for low light for both but remember that you'll have to manual focus with the Nikon.

None of my pics have been played with - apart from making a few black & white!

For low light on the Nikon... the Sigma 30mm F1.4 is good, and the Nikon 50mm F1.4 AF-S (released next month) will both auto focus on the D40.

They are all as they came out of the camera. Downloaded to PC and uploaded to the net.

No PS tweaking at all as I can't use photoshop!
The only thing I did was add a border to the castle one and even that I didn't do properly!

I have the casio as an evening take out with the mates type of camera. Ideal point and shoot that I don't mind getting beer on!

Yeh I think I'll keep using it for nights out etc but it gets annoying when what you're looking at looks nothing like what the camera has took!

To be honest of the current crop (no pun intended) of SLRs in this price range you won't really go wrong with either the Nikon or Canon.

It's a little artificial to just compare photos from the two bodies because one of the biggest contributing factors is going to be the glass attached to the front of it. Ultimately the quality of the glass will have much more influence over the quality of the photo than the body...

decent glass + right composition = great photography.

like has been said, posting photos is useless really, its more down to the person behind the camera, the glass and the PS skills than the body really, plus anything looks good at these sizes, when you get them full size out of the camera, thats where the difference is noticeable.

You need to read a few reviews really where they have tested the two with the same lenses and the same person etc. DP review will be good as posted above.
