Damn Salt

Hi All,

Only had my car about 3 months and already the back breaks are jaming on in the mornings. I am assuming that salt from the roads has become traped inside them.

Does anyone know of an easy way i.e without dismanteling the brakes to clean them out.

Dave

P.S. I love the salt really it gets rid of all the nasty snow and ice. :D

its just damp making the surface of the discs corrode overnight and sometimes making the pads stick to the disc. its perfectly nomal and nothing to worry about it will clear as soon as you brake a few times driving down the road.

As homo boy said its just the surface rust causing them to stick, nothing to worry about all rear disked cars do this.

Not sure if it is just the damp. Its calapers at the rear and their is a nasty grinding noise as I break coming from the rear making me think it is salt. Even after a few heavy stamps on the breaks!!

:(

hhhmmm, possibly a stone or something caught in there if its grinding even when it should have cleared, road salt should break down if it was caught in there tbh.

How worn are your pads? Nasty grinding noise could be no pads left! What is the surface of the disk like?

if the car is three months old and its doing it then shouldnt be pads, if you have personally owned it 3 months and it is older then its possibly the pads f**ked and the back plates grinding against the discs or warped corroded discs

car is around 6 months old only 6k on the clock so pads should be ok. It is the drums at the back not the front pads that are making the noise.

Take it in to the dealer and get them to sort it. its well withing warranty. possibly an issue with the brake shoes or their adjustment, either way its a new car you paid a price for it and why shouldnt you make use of your warranty if you have a problem.

Fair enough will give the dealer a call, just thought there might be something I could do myself.

Cheers D

I get this sticking when the weather is damp or the car has been sitting for a couple of days when it has been wet or the car hosed down, so I have alsways assumed it to be the damp making the discs rust and then after being driven and braked a few times it probably gets rubbed away!

Its the common problem the drum brakes suffer from.

Theres a tech note for it (called 4156A) Renault will fix it under warently it takes 2.7hrs although its not huge problem.

If you want a copy of the tech note PM me your email address.
