Dash Cam Insurance PREMIUM?! WHAT?!

  182 BG
Hi all,

Just been on the phone to my insurance company regarding a different matter, and mentioned that I've just ordered a dash cam and if I would be eligible for a discount as I know some companies do offer that..

The response? Sorry Sir, that would be classed as a modification to your vehicle so would incur an extra premium.. EH?!

Has anyone had any dealings with dash cams and insurance companies that can shed some light on this? Currently with elephant though I won't be come renewal at this rate!

Cheers,
mctw

Call again and say what you've said in this thread. I doubt that's company policy and more likely just someone having a bad day and being bad at their job.

  Shit little Yaris...
I would tell them to jog on and get insurance elsewhere. Mongs.

Yea run it past someone else and if they are insistent it's a modification tell them it has been removed, that's ridiculous

Swift cover reduce the premium if you have a dash cam. They are listed under the modifications that don't need to be declared iirc.

Maybe I should declare that empty can of coke i've left in the car,
as i'm pretty sure they didn't come with one from the factory.

how do you prove you have a dash cam as surely they are removeable items and you can just say you have one?

I'd imagine when you make a claim they might just want to see the footage!

its removable so it wasnt fitted at that time due to maintenance? surely you understand what im getting at here? if its not hardwired into the car how can it bring lower premiums?

Glad it's not just me that things its crazy!

I'll ring up again and kick up a fuss! Only reason I mentioned it was I hoped I might get a discount (never hurts to try!)

Plus as gally said.. I'm a little concerned that should I try to use it (and lets hope I never have too!) it would count against me!

Swift cover have a section on their website about it. Jakey ones like phones are not included.

I imagine the premiums will drop if you have a dashcam, but if you do indeed have an accident and forget to record, or the device isn't there, that could be a tricky situation to be in!

Hi,
Please feel to give us a try for insurance if you like. We have a number of schemes that offer discounts for a range of in-car cameras.
Regards,
Dan.

Clear modification :p

Surprised you are questioning it LOL

In all seriousness, that is beyond silly!!

I would stick with specialist brokers in future, maybe our good selves!! Free cosmetic modifications and very flexible with performance mods!

+ You have the knowledge (use of the term knowledge is very loose) of the clios as I have one ;) so that means I know everything...right?

On another note, which dash cam did you go for, as I was considering one.

Only certain cameras are covered by insurance - Things like Blackvue etc.

Ebay specials will be helpful if you have an accident, but they won't see a drop in your premium.

I didn't declare my camera and there was no problem when it came to using footage from it.

I don't get why there would be any question over it though, I mean all you are doing is covering yourself in the event of an accident...

Thanks for all your input guys, will definitely be ringing up and kicking up a fuss (and maybe lying a touch about a 'friend' getting a discount - it can't hurt!)..

Definitely be moving to a different company when renewal comes around, paid all up front this year and only halfway through the policy so would be insane to change :(

How about if I just drive along filming everything on my phone? Do I get pennies off for that?

Found it near impossible to get insurance from any "specialist" companies with the R, which was a bit lame to be honest (most companies gave the stance that the car was too expensive to insure, but surely that isnt right? plenty of cars will see more value than that).

Ahh well, see how it goes with Hastings Direct.

It would seem to me that the person you spoke to on the phone simply didnt understand what a dashcam was, and probably assumed it was something like a GoPro being used for filming you when undertaking questionable driving!
