Detailing begineer -My RB 182

Car  Mk2 escort RS2
Hi guys,
I am very much a begineer to detailing so I dont know all the techniques and products used to to get a car back to its best yet but after having my RB182 for two weeks now I though I'd have a go seeing as we had some decent weather this morning.

Basically all I did was:

- Wash (Dodo juice sour power)
- Clay (Sonus fine)
- Wash (Dodo juice sour power)
- Dry (using drying towel)
- SRP x2 ( hour apart)
- Meguiars #16 paste wax (1 coat but intend to layer it tomorrow hopefully)

Finally I dressed the tyres using Meguiars trim gel and applied auto glym metal polish to the pee shooters.

Like I said iam a beginner to this so if anyone has any comment on where ive gone wrong or how I should go to improve the look then please tell me :D

Here are the pic's (Unfortunatley I dont think my crappy camera does the car justice)

Nevermind, It gives me another chance to have a go at cleaning it tomorrow ;)

Someone will be along shortly to tell you not to bother layering polish ;)

Looks good though...!

Know how you feel about the rain in Wales ! I used to live in swansea, and I think in 5 years, I washed my car once. At least it's clean rain, unlike the rubbish we get in SE England :(

Cheers! :D I will save my energy with regards to the layering then, Just thought that how you do it.

All feedback welcome (Pos or neg).

Yeh does rain a fair bit in Wales but like you say at least its clean mountain valley rain ;) lol

There is evidence to suggest that multiple layers of SRP helps to mask swirls, but I don't personally think it's worth the effort.

As stated, get some more #16 on and you're sorted, should see you through to Feb/Mar.

Looks mint :)

On RB to gauge the difference in depth by product is near on impossible! Your process is fine, although you don't need to wait between hits with SRP...There's no curing time required.

Keep it up!

Good start, I wouldn't bother with SRP though, it will mask swirls ever so slightly but it's not durable at all and you will end up reapplying it after the next wash in order to get the same effect, which is very time consuming. A proper polish and good washing technique is much better.

That's why he topped it with Megs #16...?

Which 'proper polish' do you recommend?

I've never found SRP to last past another wash personally, even when topped up with a wax such as #16.

It just annoys me that autoglym call it a 'polish'

All the polishes I use are designed to be applied by machine, so I'm guessing if he's a beginner he wont have one. But I use a range of polishes depending on the level of cut I'm after etc, megs, britemax, sonus etc

nope I ahve not got a machine polisher (Thinking of buying one) so I was all applied by hand.

What is a good or better subsitute for SRP?

At a reasonable price ;)

SRP is a good polish to be used by hand, It certainly lasts longer than a week if its sealed with a good sealant.

I dont know a lot but I agree, I have only recently really got into detailing by reading about techniques and products etc but I have always kept my cars clean over the years and been Using SRP on its own for the past 6 years and its always delivered good results in my opinion.

I wouldnt have a clue about its durability as Ive always polished/ waxed my cars around once a month anyway.

I am thinking of investing in a machine polisher though

Always looks so good this colour, when clean.

As previously stated by the usuals, don't bother with two applications of SRP. It is a polish that will remove contaminents on the paint, such as left over sealent and wax, and fill a few swirls, but not add anything in terms of protection.

Looks great!

SRP isn't a good filler polish to be honest, so as said just prep the paint with it or use clay, then use some good protection on top of it. Try a selant before you put the wax on as it would be more durable than just wax.

Car looks good though mate. By fare the best colour, but i'm biased :D

Cheers, I will try that. I wish that I had taken some pic's yesterday as it looks far better in the sunlight.

I might try some new products so if anyone knows of a particular wax or polish that in their opinion works well on Racing blue I would like to know.

Thansk for all the feedback so far, really appreciate it! :D

Standard answer would be SRP followed by AutoGlym EGP then a wax on top. Perfectly acceptable.

More recent answer would be something like Blackhole followed by Chemical Guys Blitz Sealent, then wax.

Chemical guys is good stuff and reasonably priced too. Also very easy to use/apply.

Wax wise i like dodo (although JD might disagree ;)), but meguiars stuff isn't too bad and quite cheap.

Are they any better than the Auto Glym equivalents?

Cheers :D

AG stuff is ok, but for a less "picky" market really. hense why you find it in halfords etc. It's good stuff, well some of the stuff is (bumper care is wicked stuff). But for me there are a lot better products out there for around the same money.

In a word, yes. The sealent is, certainly. Blackhole is quite good, but to be honest, I would choose to machine in Lime Prime (yes Jonny, a DJ product ;)) over anything. That or machine in SRP.

But I'm guessing we are talking about hand application?

Yeha, less fillers (if at all) than SRP. Very good IMO. And you know me and my thoughts on most of the DJ range.
