Hi there. Was having a discussion the other day between some members and i am wondering what the main differences are.

Are they the same engines???

All help is appreciated.

Thanks, Sam!

Exhaust manifold , different map and less restrictive cat on the 182 . In the real world there is no difference in terms of performance .

i always hear plenty people saying theres no difference in the real world between the 2 but ive got to say id have to disagree.

obviously we all knows that no 2 cars are the same and all that so driving a 172 and then a 182 is hard to determin the difference, but ive driven MY 172 with both the standard 172 manifold and then the 182 manifold on it and it made a BIG difference especially in mid range pull (granted this is with a decat fitted but as the 182 has a sports cat as standard i cant see it gaining much by fitting a decat anyway)

just my opinion

i've heard that Renault developed the 182 specifically for the female driver, who couldn't handle the pace of the past 172 ph1, ph2 and cup models.

Apparently, hidden in the subframe is a 200kg block of cheese

That wasn't actually what the OP was asking .He wanted a comparison between a standard 172 and 182 , not one with any mods :quiet:

My 182 with cup packs handles better than my 172 did , all my opinion of course . But other than that there is no difference performance wise .

The release of the 182 was more of a marketing ploy by Renault rather than a serious uprgrade , it was to keep inline with the release of the PUG 206 180 . Funny how the Clio was called the 182 eh ;)

yes i know thats what he wanted, people are stating theres no performance difference between the 2 and im arguing that there is, but its hard to tell from car to car because of the reason ive stated. mine has the main difference from a 172 and a 182 fitted and it DID give a power gain and make the car faster, so in theory the 182 is the faster car. but we all know how engines vary

Wasn't the 172 slightly lighter standard than the 182. Obviously putting the 182 exhaust setup on the 172 will make a difference. Increased flow will increase power. Decat might have been the main difference though. Suspension set up was much better on the 182 IMO of course. Feels more planted.

Hey how about the manifold on a cup? Is this different to a normal 172? Or will you still see a gain sticking a 182 manifold on? Thanks

Traction control & cruise control is standard on 182, whilst the 172 is was optional until about 2003 when it then became standard.
