Disconnecting Battery

Hi,

Have read on here about lots of problems with the trip computer and immobiliser after disconnecting the battery. Is there a right/wrong way to do this. I will need to disconnect mine soon and really don't want any electrical faults!

Never had an issue on mine and the battery has been off it several times, just make sure if you are running the std head unit that you have the code to hand.

Ok thanks, thought it may be a bit impractical to have a car that goes haywire every time you disconect but have read some worrying stories about Renault wanting to replace instrument panels doing so!!!!

I have got factory Sat Nav, any idea what it's going to do to that? I will dig out the instruction manual tonight and have a read, will also find my code - good point!!

In theory it should do nothing but I wouldn't be too surprised if you lose any presets you have on it.

Sometimes, trip computer forgets the tank level so a blink will be displayed when displaying "how much miles with this gas" number.

If that happens you must restart the trip computer. Better have it done in a service.

Disconnected my battery last week and would not start for 3 days, Immobiliser light kept flashin and engine just turning over , Then on the 3rd day started straight away as if nothing had ever been wrong been normal ever since

Mmmmm, worrying! How far does the battery reach out of it's cradle without disconnecting it I wonder!?!?!

might as well just dissconnect it, it's gonna be done by the garage in a service etc.

True but at least then it's at the garage if anything goes wrong, not outside my dads house on ramps, would be a right b1tch if it didn't start then. Fluck, I'll disconnect it anyway, what's the worst that could happen.............

exactly, at worst you'd have to call out an auto electrician. But would you really expect problem from a new car, guessing yours is less than 4 yrs old. Would be a very small number of cars that have a problem as batterys are only ment to last about 3 years.

if u want to reset the instrument panel and have the trip button on the end of the wiper stalk(ie 172/182), make sure keys are in ignition but turned off, hold down the button on end of wiper stalk, whilst holding turn the ignition on and it should go into auto-test/diag mode, then press the little reset button on the panel itself iirc should reset the panel for u.

sorry should have put, dis-connecting the battery shouldnt affect it at all first, but if u need to reset the panel as above!
