Just been round to a clients got onto the subject of Digi Cams, he has been doing photography for a lot of years.

Dragged out his kit he had a D80 and a D200 and numerous lenses.

Anyway he sent me home with a AF Nikkor 80-200MM 1:2.8

He says its a good lense but just old, is it any good. I have it for a few weeks what sort of stuff is it worth testing it out with? I am a total camera noob, only got my D40 yesterday. Also has a Hoya Skylight (1B) on the end as well.

it will work with the D40 but only manual focus.

Yep allready knew that. Guess it will get me used to Manual focus.

Leave the skylight filter on too, it'll protect the lens glass from scratches :approve:

It's not a good lens, it's one of the sharpest zoom lenses money can buy and a bit of a Nikon legend. I've got the slightly newer AF-S version (works with the D40) but the glass is the same, shame you are missing out on auto-focus as it's one of the most absurdly quick focusing lens going.

Every remotely good shot beyond 50mm I've taken has been with the 80-200, the sharpness is mind boggling.

What I'd give for a D200 for it to be attached to

Yeah just on loaner. Its one MONSTER lense. Quite hard to keep still and focus with it LOL

Will keep plugging away with it, he let me have a play with his D200 and with Auto focus you are right it focussed mega quick. Shame its bloody dark all the time. When I first clipped it on it was moaning at me to set the aperture to 22, took me a while to figure that out LOL didnt realise where it was.

He is an older guy in his 60's fairly wealthy and a cracking bloke to be honest. He has said when he goes away after crimbo I am welcome to borrow his D200 and lenses. He has a few more so think I will give it a wee crack
