DVLA Vehicle Keeper History - how to get yours!

Apologies if this has been discussed before but couldn't find anything on a search!

For those of you who enjoy having a nice history folder with your car, have a look on the DVLA website and in the search box, type in V888....... this brings up a downloadable 2 page form (only the first page needs filling in) and from this you can obtain a full owner history of your car in paper form for only £5.00! I've done this for every car I've owned for several years now, including my 182, and it's a great way of finding out more about the car :car:

It takes a few weeks to come through but when it does arrive, you basically get a copy of everything they have on file for the car, so list of owners and the dates they owned it, old V5's (signatures blanked out of course), original request for tax etc etc. The request for tax is handy as shows who sold the car when new if you don't know already.

May not be everyone's interest but thought i'd share for the people who might want to get one

I can also recommend using V888, did this on my 1992 RS2K Escort and got an absolute wad of paperwork (10 owners), and some interesting things came to light from its early history, well worth the trouble & fiver especially on older cars.

How do you get something useful from just a list of names? Or do you get more than that?

Could do with a Japanese version....

In my case, I got photocopies of ALL of the actual V5 (registration documents) with all the details they contain, e.g. names addresses, dates etc, plus transfer/change of owner notifications, etc. In fact everything that had passed through the DVLA since the car was first registered.

That's actually very cool. I did think with regards data protection and all that jazz you wouldn't get addresses.

£5 for general public?

In our industry we pay £14,000 for an electronic link and £2.50 per reg to get the most recent keeper details back in 24 hours. Or no up front cost and £2.50 a go but 6 week turn around.

£5 must be a bargain then, probably not worth doing for a 2/3 owner vehicle though, as originally posted-it does take a while as it's likely not a priority with them, -I think it was about 4 weeks in my case.

That's exactly right, for a low owner and/or new vehicle you won't get much back, but for an older car it's well worth doing. I mean for my Clio I got a decent amount of information on several sheets as it's had a few owners BUT the best one was my old 1990 Fiesta RS Turbo......... that was like a small book!! Never had so much info back from the DVLA as it had also had private plates over the years too.

Could you do this to find the new keeper info of a car a family member used to own? My dad used to have a Williams and I'm very keen to buy it back as a surprise for him.

Can you get anyones details?
Like if you were looking to find 'that amazing car' you had when you were 21 so you can buy it back??

A bit late, but the BMW that crashed into me and disappeared that I have footage on my dash cam from about 15 months ago, I could obtain the owners details and ask for him to Nicely cover the damage costs, a new RB door wasent worth the insurance muck about [emoji85][emoji23]

For section 4, do you just write "all the information you have" and "to keep for my reference"?

Did you report that to the police for fleeing the scene of an accident?

Yup, nothing they could do as I did not want to go via the insurance, gave them a copy of the footage

so just because you didn't want to go through your insurance the police let him off with a hit and run?

I was told they would be in touch, back in 2015... might go back in and actually ask what's going on about it. But I'd prefer to send the driver the bill of repairs and proof of him hitting me, and just try and get a buck or two towards repairs. I've already lost but a little fuel money as compensation wouldn't go a miss [emoji12]

Im afraid that police will interesting ONLY if there is a injured person. This is happened to me with my previous car. They told me that i will have to go through my insurance because there is no injuries and they have more important thinks to do.
I'm guessing eating doughnuts is more important for them
