ECU remap or reset - Mods

  BMW M3
Hi there,

I recenlty had my inlet manifold matched and it is now running very rich, as i can tell from my black sooted exhaust pipes lol....

I was intending on having a Dastek Unichip custom remap done soon after but that has been put on hold.

I was just wondering what i should do to compensate for the difference in air flow, oh, and my new Janspeed backbox.

Is it just a case of resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery for a few hours and it will adjust to the new mods or does it have to be properly remapped?

Thanks

The Ecu should compensate really, you can get your standard ECU remapped by pmurray and other such as ktec or bb tuning for about £200

Ok. Thanks, but surely the fact that my brand new janspeed pipes just get sooted up all the time, it is not compensating, and its annoying.

Dastek are very near me so will prob go to them in the next month or so.

How do i get it to run ok until i get the custom remap?

If anything your car will be running lean with a matched manifold and exhaust. Your car will be OK but I wouldn't drive at high rpm for any extended period.

For the money it costs, you'd be mad not to get a remap/replacement ECU..... My group N made the biggest single difference out of all the mods on my car.

I am getting a remap but in a month or so. Is there anything i can do until then?

Edit: And i meant to say Lean, not rich...sorry.

I don't think there's much you can do... a so called ECU reset might help, but I really don't know enough about such things. All I know is that when I had my inlet done, Nick Hill suggested that I didn't thrash my car for extended periods until I'd had my ECU changed.

I'm considering getting my spare ECU mapped by Yozzasport when I have a bit more psare cash.

If anyhting your car should be rnning lean ie no dark smoke. Dark black smoke indicated overfuling I'd guess when your intake manifold was replaced the injecotrs or somehting got damaged.
The engine will compensate below 75% throttle and 4k but above this it won't.

im getting my inlet done soon but im holding off ecu work until my exhaust system is fitted then get it done, iv been told that no damage will be done to the engine only run lean. by lean does this mean not using enough fuel to serve the engine beause of the new engine mod that requires more fuel?
also i hear some say on this thread that you shoudnt hold it at high rpm for a long period of time, why is this?

thanks

I dont get dark smoke or anything out of the pipes, but just notice that there is black soot on the tips after long journeys.

My understanding is that usually, mods that improve airflow, such as inlet matching, exhausts/de-cats and Induction kits etc... will run lean as there is a greater amount of air per the amount of fuel (what ever the ratio is).

I would also like to know why driving at high RPM for long periods when running lean is not good.

Thanks

Its not good running lean at all but longer periods can lead to damage in extreme cases burned exhaust valves etc a forum meber running with a lot of tunning parts once ruined his engine when the remap setup failed and it ran lean for ages but that was head work cams etc enough to get just over 200hp.

Is there any quick and easy way of measuring AFR?
I had my ecu mapped a while ago which did make a difference but I also get a sooty exhaust. Now I wouldn't think a sooty exhaust definately meant I was running rich but I would like to know wether I can match my inlet without a second remap.
What should the AFR be on a 172, not that I know what the figures mean.

Well, i dont think i will be running very lean then as i only have an ITG panel filter and inlet manifold match, and now a janspeed back box.

What sort of rpm and time. I drove to newcastle to other day and was a bit late. Did venture into high figures for about 5 mins but car still seems 100%

Just a thought.... with these mods i should be running lean if anything, but having sooty deposites on the exhaust tips indicates its running rich so....

... is it possible that the ECU is over correcting the amount of fuel it needs due to the increase in air and has increased the fuel a bit too much?
