engine options??

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
looking at possible options for an engine conversion in the valver

criteria - want to use standard ecu from engine (not got the funds for aftermarket managment)
wants to be relatively hassle free (dont mind some fabrication and jiggery pokery)
doesnt want to have done high miles and need reconning etc, its going to be a track car, its going to get driven like a track car  so the lump needs to take some stick
wants to be economically viable, ie not wanting to spend a fortune, i will say a grand to have the engine in and running and ready to use, but anything cheaper than that is a bonus ;)

top of my list is 172 lump at the moment, not alot of hassle, good gains, fair few low mileage engines coming up for sale as people keep writing them off

i would only consider a williams engine if it was either low miles or recently reconned, finding one like this for decent money is a tad difficult

what about other renault engines? megane, laguna etc?

2.0 bottom end for a megan and get your head ported and with come cams.

Get the bottom end rebuilt as well always helps.

Forget any other option IMO.

so lets say worse case scenario is that the cambelt snapping has bent a valve, am i still better off getting this head reconned and using a megane bottom end?

what sort of pricing am i looking at for getting this work done? and im assuming the ecu is gonna have to be remapped to accomodate the cams?

cheers for the reply edde :)

Yep Ported valver head on 2.0 bottom end rebuild with cat cams would be very quick.

How much can you DIY?

ECU can be mapped its common now to be done.

You'd need a remap for the 2.0 bottom end the cams are worth sticking in if your rebuilding and remapping anyway there not cheap though so you could leave them out but the bill depends what you can do yourself.

im ok with mechanics and am willing to learn and try anything myself

electrics is where i stumble a bit

am i right im thinking that a renault 19 16v lump is the same and will be a straight swop?

you could put a 172 engine in, but if you plan on modifying it then the F7R is a much better engine and will make better power (not necessarily more, just how it is delivered).

As Edde says, get a Megane bottom end, then just need a chip or replacement Williams ECU. The valver head will also fit straight on and you dont need to worry about *****ing around to get everything to fit and stay in.

arrrgghh this bloody decision is doing my nut in :S

the original idea was to put the 172 lump in and leave it standard, having fun with the engines power in a car that will hopefully weigh not a lot

then after having real trouble finding the right 172 lump for the right price i started thinking about another valver lump (poss using 2.0 bottom end), mentioned this to our lass and she made a very good point...'but it wont be what you had your heart set on in the first place so you will end up wishing you had done it'

got to admit she's right! although my brain says spend less money and get a replacement valver lump, my heart says put the 172 in
