EP3 Civic Race Car Project.

Bought this week to build into another race car, the clio is staying on as well though.
The plan is to have it done sometime in 2015.

Its a 2005 facelift car and came with a few nice bits to offset the build cost like Premier edition Recaro seats and a few other mods.
Sold the seats and dropped them off yesterday, snug fit in the back of the allroad.

Got it in the garage and have started stripping it a little, mostly just to remove the bits I've sold, priority this week is to have the clio all ready for Cadwell this coming weekend so no major work yet.

This is as far as I've got do far, seats door cards and wheel off. Airbox removed and up fit sale too.

Already bought some shiny bits, notably some evo 8 Enkei wheels which are a common fixture on ep3s due to them bolting straight on and being 8" wide. They should be here tomorrow.
Also bagged a set of AP Racing brakes 330mm 2 piece front discs, hoses and 4pot callipers.

That's it for now really. The plan is to have it done next year sometime and possibly run it in the cscc tintop series. It will hopefully be along the same lines as the clio build with a decent spec straight out of the box, next job is to decide on a cage.

Love it.

Any idea on plans for the engine?

You'll take it apart and refresh/rebuild yourself I take it?

yes mate exactly that, rough engine plans are rbc/rrc inlet manifold, exhaust manifold and 3" system along with hondata ecu, that'll make circa 250bhp, might also drop a set of cams in as the engine is coming out anyway. 265-270bhp would be ideal.

Can they really gain that much. Wow. What an engine.

I was amazed at this also when I fitted a k20 engine to my mates ek4. Rbc manifold, hybrid racing ic and a 3" iTuned exhaust system mapped at tdi north it made 251.5bhp but downside is there was little torque :(

Look forward to seeing this progress anyway. Should be fun with those mods. I'm still tempted by one tbh.

No. Not at all. What gave you that idea?!?

Is now the wrong time to mention Paul west of tdi north is a mate of mine? It's certainly where this will be going to be mapped and it's where my clio was done, wouldn't trust anyone else tbh.

Nothing wrong with their work at all. Just the roller over reads a bit.

If I had a civic I'd take it to them 100% pal. Their work is spot on. It's literally just the roller that over reads. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Looks like itll be decent, as stated you'll not see 250 with those mods. Set of cams would see you get up there though. Look forward to seeing this project develop.

I love the debate power numbers cause, that will be the last mention of them by me in this thread, pretty sure there's no dyno figures in my clio thread either as they're totally irrelevant!
Moving on, my set of evo wheels turned up today.

As I'm sure your aware Russ the only reliable way to obtain a real power figure is to run it on an engine dyno. I'm surprised your not aware of the 1 second per lap you gain from the pubtalkbhpfigure though. You'll have to google it as it makes for an interesting read. It comes up under the heading of 'my dads bigger than your dad' or 'my **** is bigger than your ****'. Flol!!

From what I hear, yours wouldn't look out of place on a cocktail stick.

Looks like a good project Russ, I think these are good value for money if I'm honest.

Nice project. I absolutely love the quality of the build with your Clio and I'm sure the civic will be just as impressive. This will be a very quick car once it's finished.

Civic type r's make fantastic race cars.

Thanks Jack.
Been busy today stripping the interior out of the car. Got all the seat belts, trim, carpet and roof lining out and promptly filled the audi with it all ready for the skip!

Left the dash in for now, but it'll be coming out shortly once I've decided on the route I'm going with the cage. Next jobs are fun, sound deadening removal and bracket removal.

Tried one of my evo wheels on the rear of the car, think I'll need the arch roller on there to get some decent size tyres on.

More stripping this week and hopefully a definitive plan for the cage.

There's certainly a surprising amount of stuff that's come out mate, the amount of interior bolts alone are probable double the amount that's in a full clio! A lot of extra metal brackets and stuff too, started on the wiring now too and there's a fair bit of that gone.
It's currently on the back burner while I do the winter strip and rebuild of the clio.
Russ

There doesn't seem to be that much sound deadening in there?

Was there much weight to be saved from all the crappy interior bits?

Been dropping on the civic in between other jobs, just carrying on with the interior prep of the shell. All interior wiring has been stripped back so all thats left are the rear lights and fuel pump/sender.

Also managed to get the dash board out, ffs its obscene, the whole unit is at least 40-50kg's, none of it is going back in! Managed to get the heater matrix and blower boxes out too so the only things left are the pedals. Ecu and engine wiring loom removed from cabin along with epas wiring.

Stripped a few redundant bits out of the engine bay too, airbox, battery, battery tray and brackets, heater hoses, some wiring, the aircon pipes and a/c canister. Looking a bit clearer and easier to work on, not clio easy but it'll get better.

Some things have come to my attention though, if i want my seat where i want it i'm going to have to fit a pedal box + do some nice fabrication for a substantially extended/lowered steering column and complete new mounting solution for the gear change mechanism, not a major issue as its cable change.
I already have some bits and pieces drawn out but need all cage and seat rails and seat in first. Speaking of cages, itlooks like i'm backtracking already as i'm 99% sure im going for a full Safety devices international spec weld in cage from Rob at Area Motorsport.
http://www.safetydevices.com/motorsport/products/roll-cage/Honda Civic -2001-2005-3-door-EP3/201/1060/
its heavier than i wanted or than is necessary but i think i can make up for the weight increase by being creative with the dash and forward controls, watch this space, cage should be here in 6 weeks if i get it ordered asap, lots of brackets to remove before then!
Also i need to make a desicion on what to do with the PAS as its electrically assisted with a motor on the column, could try and get it up and running with some wiring alterations or junk the whole lot and convert to hydraulic as on the DC5,it uses an aux belt driven pump like a clio but i might use an electric pump like a saxo/astra pump as ive done on my clio racecar.
