Expenditure on my car 182 so far

  Ph 1 172
owned my phase 1 172 for 2 years and never needed mayjor work touch wood, new tyres, new exhaust and 2 services thats all its cost me. Not including mods like coilover a decat and what not

  Mini Cooper S
Personally, had the tyres just 'cracked' on me like that and they hadn't been sat for months/years, I'd have taken pictures and complained but I'm a consumer warrior.

Complain to who? The OP didn't purchase the tyres new, he doesn't know the history of the car. He also bought the car sold as seen?

But he doesn't know the history of the tyre? He'd get nowhere. They could've been run with 5 psi for 6 months...

They could have been run lower than that for longer, but they might not.

You'd be surprised how far you can get with a well worded letter.

Cars are going to be expensive but the more you use your head the cheaper they get.

Simple things like running 15's instead of 16's, £140 for a set of T1R's opposed to ~£250. Plus the wheels being a damn sight cheaper themselves. Using cheapish oil etc all adds up.

The more work you do yourself the cheaper. Things aren't thattt hard. That thread where someone paid ~£300 to fix his leaking sunroof. Do it yourself with a tube of tigerseal/polyurethane sealant for £5 and it's sorted. Mental!

I won't add up what I've spent as it's just beyond stupid. 2 new driveshafts, full set of 16's, full set of 15's, Turini's/OZ F1's, coilpack, wheel bearing, cup splitter/blanks. That plus paying £60 to get the car rewired radio-wise by a specialist, and even that was half price! I've spent £1k on seats that have only been in the car when collecting lol.

sounds like to me OP you have a 6 year old car that needs money spending on it tbh. All cars require bits replacing eventually. especially a cheap french hatchback that, lets be honest, hasn't been driven softly for its 6 years.

Do you check the tyre pressures reguarly? The sidewalls often crack when they have a low pressure.

You can't blame the tyres on the car, you can't complain it was due for a cambelt. Exhausts need replacing on plenty of cars after a certain mileage. The only "freak" repair, may be your alternator problem. All cars have have faulty parts, that need replacing after miles of use. You're just upset you didn't budget for the majority of those costs and they happened whilst you were unemployed, all at once.

Yeah I check them at least once a week. Pretty much whenever I get petrol, I check my tyre pressures.

You are correct that certain parts will eventually need replacing and I can't complain at that. It just seems like every time I get one thing fixed, something else breaks. I've never known suspension to break on a car at only 75k but I guess with the state of the British roads it's inevitable. I also have never owned another car which goes through engine mounts or alternators like a Clio can! The amount of things I see on here that are "common faults", fuckin hell.

As others have already said - it sounds like all things came at once and that is a lot more difficult now that you're unemployed. Bad times all-round. :(

My 182 is knocking on the door of 80k from new at the tail end of 2004. I use it everyday and when I don't, it doesn't even have the luxury of a garage to be parked in.

I do look after it and the lads at Birchdown give it their TLC treatment every 12k miles. But even they aren't some arcane alchemists who can magic-up bomb proof parts and components that will last hundreds of thousands of miles. I expect that things will start to go wrong - that bills that I wasn't expecting start to crop up. The car gets used and as such only has a shelf-life of x-years until things start to go wrong - pretty much like anything else.

The only reason I've yet to purchase an Evo VI is my belief in that statement above. And then some. I'd be looking at a 10 year old car that through the course of its life has probably been ragged, stolen, abused and/or spent many a day on a circuit. While they are designed to take some abuse - they can't keep that up forever and eventually something has to break. And the Three Red Diamond parts ain't cheap!

Look at it positively. You're extending the useful life of the car you bought. That can only be a good thing in itself, surely?

In all fairness cars are going to break and you probably could have got things done cheaper by going to a a local garage and buying parts yourself. I have had my mk2 172 ff for 5 years and it has had a new rear axle, two full sets of tyres, two new cv joints, plus replacing boots and the inner complete kit, new springs for the front, 3 sets of shockers at the back (that's what speed bumps do !), two new back boxes, a new mid section. Believe me my car has cost me a fortune but these are parts that do need replacing over time ( apart from the axle thats just a long story). I still wouldn't get rid of it and at least i know things are right with it ! for another week anyway .... ;)

Not sounding harsh, but maybe its the way you drive if your smashing through engine mounts quickly, or you just talking in general ?

Cars always go wrong, wish i didnt by a car tbh lol.. Would have been rich by now.

My 182 is a pig to look at. Stone chips galor. But it hasnt put a foot wrong or missed a beat. Bearing it mind its high miles and a couple of owners.

Hope your troubles ease off you mate...

It's a shame French cars aren't able to do normal mileages without having everything go wrong. I guess coming from a Honda I didn't expect to have so many issues! That was approaching 100k and I only had to replace wear & tear items like brake pads and tyres.

Not long sold my 16v W reg laguna to a mate, its now on 151,000 miles. I had it since 92k(4 years ago) and all i've had go since then is two rear wheels bearings. Usual wear and tear items like tyres expected/general servicing. 1 owner before me with all Receipts/full renault history, original clutch/gearbox, still runs beautifully.

Few German cars at work(only a few years old) seem to go wrong all the time, BMW 120i keeps having new injectors, also had a new steering rack/windscreen washer pump under warrenty.. He should have bought my £800 Renault.

It just seems to be if you get a good car no matter what make it is.

My 5.5 year old 182 with 42k on has had a headlight washer replaced, that's it.
