Experience with CHIPEX touch up

  Clio 1.2 Dynamique
I'm looking at repairing a few chips on my bonnet and a small scuff that someone left for me in a car park the other day. Has anyone had experience with the CHIPEX touch up kits?

Also, I'm waiting for a call back from the reno stealers but could anyone tell me the name of the colour for the paint code TED44? ive looked in the paint codes stickys but cant see it.

Cheers, Dec

Heard back from reno and TED44 is also D44, so its odyssey blue as i thought.

I bought a Chipex kit a few years ago, barely used it really but did some bonnet chips last autumn and a larger piece on the bonnet where a brick hit it. :(

Chips have all blended nicely but the larger part is still noticeable (to me at least), partly due to the yellow being slightly off, partly due to the dent that's in the same place. It's all pretty simple to use as long as you take your time and fill the chips progressively. I use cheap fine arts brushes when applying it.

The ones I've done with the Chipex stuff look better than the previous owners attempts which I assume were just blobbed on with a Fiat kit.

excellent, thanks for that mate. they're more expensive than the regular kits so i was hoping for the better result

Yeah, I think mine was £50 back in the day, I see there's a few kits at different prices now.

I just need to get my arse in gear and use the rest of it around the car!

They've got a sale on now so I need to get mine in gear and part with the money!

Imo , it looks a bit expensive for what you get . There used to be a link to a guide on detailingworld years ago which i used and it worked . Just get yourself an aerosol mixed up in your colour , a few cocktail sticks and some 2500 or 3000 grit wet n dry paper . Make sure the chip is clean , no wax or dirt , use some panel wipe or Isopropyl alcohol , acetone would work too . Spray a small amount of the paint in the lid then using the cocktail sticks fill the chips with the paint , building up the paint until it stands proud , leaving to dry in between , it dries pretty quickly . Leave it to dry for 24 hours or so and then gently sand back then polish .

I watched a video on youtube how to use that chipex kit . I don't believe for a minute they got such good results the way they did it . It was like a 3 year old child had put blobs of paint in the chips lol . But then again , the video has to be convincing because they want to sell their product .

OK had a go with it today. What you get:

Washed the car and gave the area a wipe with eraser to ensure no wax etc. My chips of choice.
Small one on the bonnet.

And a nasty one on the bumper.

Dabbed a bit of the paint on.

I think I over did it a bit to be honest and it would have been better with a couple of layers. Left it half an hour to dry as per the instructions. Then wipe over with the blending fluid to take off the excess and leave just the paint in the chip. Then polish to make the area shiny.

You can clearly still see the chips, maybe another layer would have made it look better? From a bit further back it looks much better than the big black hole in the paint. I'll have another go next time the weather is decent.

I find the spongey bit on the applicators a bit too big for most chips, so tend to rip that off leaving a finer tip or use toothpicks.

Colour match wise they are the same as you'd get at most places tbh.

Thread bump on this

Anyone used it and what's the verdict?

Would be interested to know too.

I've used the stuff in the past, very happy with the results. As Clio_fool has shown and said it is a lot better than leaving it untreated. I also went over it with a DA polisher and that helped.

Another trick I have used is just get some paint mixed up as an aerosol and apply in the same way as Chipex - spray into the lid of the can, use a cotton wool bud to dab it into the chip, build up the layers and then DA about a week after. Works a treat on non-metalic paint.

There's a card in the kit that says if you upload a review with before and after pics they will give you a free kit for any car of your choosing. I wonder if we could just keep bumping that around the forum? 😂
