F4R engine (172/182) Gearboxes...

they're made of butter, common for them to start crunching with abuse/improper use + just plain old bad luck!

They are on the list of known issues with the Clio Sport.

Most people won't have gearbox problems. But a significant number will. As with all areas of human endevour those do have the problem will blame factors beyond their control, like poor gearbox design, and those who don't will credit it to their own superior capabilities. The truth is that its as Fred says. The gearbox is marginal for the power of the engine and the way the car is likely to be used. So if you get a bad one or mistreat it it will fail.

Gearbox - synchros worn out on some gears.
TDC sensor failed - won't start.
Dashboard rattles - can't fix.
Wheel bearings - noisy, have to be replaced.
Etc, etc.
