Fan belt squeal

  Oyster Card
I've installed my new sound system today, it's 1000 watts and my car doesn't like it one bit.

At night time if I have the system on the belt almost constantly squeals if I turn the system off the squeal disapears.

Before having to strip half the car down to tighten the belt (Bloody french) is there anything I can put on it I've heard about belt dressing and going over the belt with a wire brush, clutching at straws here but from what I've heard it's not an easy job to tighten the fan belt?

Cheers

you only need to loosen a couple of bolts on the alt to tighten it

i had the same problem on my mk1 but i replaced the belt at the same time too

Any idea what I have to do/take off to get to it please, would be a great help as it's seriously driving me nuts sitting here now I can still hear the screach in my head.

there is a bolt on top iirc thats allows for adjustment then there is one or two underneath

Hiya Dink, Do you mean the top of the belt which is visable in the engine bay in front of the PAS pump, I imagine I have to turn the bolts clockwise a little bit?

  Valver..

Can just see the top of the belt with three bolts on the cog type thingy (Techy talk eh) dont think I can see the alt will check in daylight it's a 1.4 Energy engine btw.

And regards to WD40; no I haven't done it but I did see on this forum someone recomend it along with scraping a candle over the belt to revitalise it?

Can't understand why its making the belt squeel, the resistance to the alternator turning doesn't have anything to do wiht the draw on the system.

Odd that its stopping squeeling when you turn the system off, but i woudl suggest its more to do with it being damp and cold

nah i had exactly the same problem with the belt squealing with the system on.

as energy cannot be created or destroyed it must be harder to turn the alt at full load

Yeah it's 100% got something to do with the amount of power consumed at the time as it does it when I switch the heated windows on, also does it when I drop down a gear and the revs go up.
